Saints Speak from Mrs. Marshall - 10/3/2024 - Be An Agent of Change

4A had a lot of fun duct-taping me to the wall today!  All classes are enjoying a movie and treat this afternoon in celebration of a successful Fun Run. Thank you again for your generous support!

This week’s saint of the week is St. Oscar Romero. St. Oscar Romero lived from 1917 to 1980 in El Salvador and was the archbishop of San Salvador. I picked him for us this week because we are in the midst of Hispanic Heritage Month, which is celebrated from mid-September to mid-October. During his life, St. Oscar Romero was known for advocating for the poor and speaking out against the violence and oppression he witnessed in his country. When he saw that people were being treated unfairly or denied their basic rights, he didn’t sit idly and watch it happen, he worked toward change.

In the coming days and weeks, think about how you can be an agent for change. We may not have the same scope that St. Oscar Romero had, but we can still stand up for justice in our own lives. We can do what we know is right and speak up when we see something that is wrong. Each small positive step adds up to big change!

October Virtue

Tomorrow our students will spend time with their faith buddies talking about our October virtue – friendship! This is such an important virtue for our students as they learn how to be good friends to one another. Click here for ideas on how you can talk about friendship at home this month.

Reminder: Parent-Teacher Conferences

As a reminder, we have a short week next week! There is no school Thursday for Parent-Teacher Conferences and no school Friday for a faculty development day. If you haven’t already done so, go to your FACTS Family Portal account to sign up for a conference. Sign-ups close on Tuesday to give the teachers an opportunity to prepare for the conferences on Thursday.

Grandparents Day

We invite our ASCA Grandparents to join us for the morning on Tuesday, November 26th! Paper invitations went home with the students this week. If it’s easier for you, please forward this electronic invitation to your child's grandparent. You can ask them to RSVP themselves, or you can RSVP for them by clicking here. We look forward to welcoming many grandparents and loved ones in November!

Family Fundraising Obligation (FFO)

The Family Fundraising Obligation (FFO) was “booked” to your FACTS accounts this week. This charge is $500 per family if you have children in K-8 and $250 per family if you only have preschool children. Please note no payment is due at this time; the charges were entered but are not due until May. There are several opportunities to earn toward your FFO, including our recently concluded Charleston Wrap fundraiser. If you participated in this sale, funds earned will be credited to your account soon and you’ll see the $500 balance owed decrease. We’ll continue to share information about other FFO opportunities throughout the year. As a reminder, the easiest way to earn toward your FFO regularly is through RaiseRight (formerly called SCRIP). The RaiseRight program allows you to purchase gift cards (physical and digital) and a percentage of your purchase is credited back to your FFO. Email raiseright@ascacademy.org for more information.

Parish Highlight: Peaceful Dialogue Homily Series at St. Thomas

Throughout the year, ASCA hosts family Masses at each of our supporting parishes. In September our students took on ministerial roles at St. Elizabeth Seton, St. Margaret Mary, Our Lady of Mercy, and St. Thomas the Apostle. While at the St. Thomas Mass last weekend, Fr. Peter invited everyone to attend their upcoming homily series on peaceful dialogue. When our world can be so polarized, the series will help us approach conversations on tough topics in a peaceful and respectful manner. While I didn’t intend to feature St. Thomas two weeks in a row, I thought this opportunity was so fitting for our theme this year! Click here for more information, and consider attending St. Thomas this weekend or next!

Volleyball Blue Out

Tomorrow night is our Blue Out! Come join us in the gym at 6pm, 7pm, and 8pm to cheer on our 8th grade volleyball teams in one of their final home games. Come early and see the 5th grade girls at 5:00! Any ASCA students in attendance will get an Out of Uniform pass!

If your children are attending Blue Out (or any home games), please remember to monitor their behavior, especially if they are outside the gym. Students should not be playing volleyball near the welcome desk our outside Door 1, as it can cause damage to ASCA property. We love having a full house for our home games but ask that students spend that time in the gym cheering on our teams!

Saintly Acts

Congratulations to the following students who earned Saintly Acts this week: Ella S.-F. (Kdg), Matthew G. (7th grade), Edison L. (6th grade), Caitlyn M. (8th grade), Mikey P. (8th grade), Andrew P. (Kdg), Danny S. (7th grade), Charlie E. (1st grade), Colton K. (1st grade), Alexa L. (4th grade), and Isabella R. (5th grade). Keep being saintly!

Warm regards,

Margie Marshall
