Saints Speak – 1/10/2019 – The Virtue of Knowledge

The virtue we are studying this week is Knowledge.  Each morning, I read a short lesson to the students about the Virtue of the Week.  This past Monday, the lesson really resonated with me.  The lesson began like this……….Knowledge is the gift of the Holy Spirit that brings us to learn more about God’s plan, and leads us to wisdom and understanding

From the Book of Ephesians we read, “Therefore, putting away falsehood, speak the truth, each one to his neighbor, for we are members of one another.”  This passage got me thinking about some information/misinformation that has been going around for a while.  I have previously tried to set the record straight with individual people;  but the message still seems to be a topic of conversation among many school parents.

It is time to discuss this rumor about me.  I have had many different people tell me they have heard this rumor.  The rumor is that I am leaving All Saints, and not going to be principal any longer. There is not a shred of evidence to this, so I don’t know why it is still circulating.  What has come back to me is that because my husband received a promotion and moved to Omaha, that we would be moving too.  It is true that he moved to Omaha.  What many may not know is that when he received the promotion, he moved from Fargo, North Dakota to Omaha.

Since moving here to Naperville, my husband has always lived away for work.  It is not ideal or fun, but it is a decision that we made in the best interest of our children.  We have four children at different places in their lives.  Constantly moving isn’t good for anyone, and my husband’s job is one that can change year to year.  Like many families have to do, he lives away and works, and then comes home a few times a month.

Our hope and prayer is that one day his job will bring him back to Chicago; but, that time is not now.  So, while I can understand why someone may have thought we were moving, we are not.  The reason I chose this moment in time to address this issue is because a rumor, however unsubstantiated, that the principal is leaving is not good for the culture and climate of a school.  This is especially true as we begin to plan for our 2019 Open House, and open enrollment for the coming school year.

I have said it before and I will say it again – I am so proud of All Saints Catholic Academy.  I am proud to have my son attend All Saints; and I am extremely proud to be the principal of ASCA.  I am proud of the work that we have done these past three years; and we are just getting started.  There is so much we still want to do as a community.  So I hope we can put this rumor to rest, and move forward in truth, ready to take on all that 2019 will bring our way!

Speaking of moving forward in truth…………..  While I am not leaving All Saints, one of our beloved staff members, unfortunately, is moving on.  Two years ago, I was in line to purchase food at the Fun Fair.  I struck up a conversation with a parent who informed me that she was looking for a job - as a nurse.  Many conversations later (including an interesting encounter with her as she chased me down in the Jewel parking lot wearing her pajamas), All Saints Catholic Academy became the only Catholic School in the Diocese of Joliet to employ an actual nurse who was an RN to help take care of our students.  Mrs. Tara Brophy came in to sub for us one day; and by the end of the day, we knew that we needed to do everything to keep her.

Tara and her husband Michael are moving to New York, where Michael has accepted a position as a University President.  While this is a great loss to our school community, we are excited for the Brophy family, as moving back to New York (which is where they hail from) will bring them closer to family.  Michael has already left for New York, but Tara and her children will remain to finish out the school year (whew!).  I know that it will be a challenge to fill her amazing shoes; but, we are looking to hire another nurse.

Please let me know if you know anyone who might be interested.  Also, take a minute to stop in to let Mrs. Brophy know how much we appreciate ALL she has done for us; and how much we will miss her.
