Saints Speak – 10/4/18 – Words are just Words until they are Brought to Life
In the beginning of the school year we talked about establishing an Attitude of Gratitude throughout this school year. Different activities have been planned each month by different staff members and grade levels to recognize, practice and further our theme.
At the Meet and Greet, our administrative staff presented an opportunity for families to create a pennant that spoke to how their family practices gratitude. Each family shared such heartfelt feelings that were so very touching and personal. All of these colorful pennants are joined together, and are hung on the fencing that surrounds our recess pad. They are almost like a warm hug on these chilly October days that remind of how we put our words into action.
In September, our junior high academy staff offered a peer recognition program called ‘You’ve Been Caught Being Kind’. In it, students were able to formally affirm each other when encountering their classmates or other students who were exhibiting kind words or actions toward each other. How wonderful is it when a student knows kindness when he or she encounters it, and is confident in proclaiming it.
During the month of October, our intermediate academy staff will have our students creating Thankful Pumpkins. These will be real pumpkins where each student will have the opportunity to write all of the things for which they are grateful on the pumpkin. Before you know it, the pumpkin will be covered, and be an inspiring visual reminder of how our students are practicing an Attitude of Gratitude, bringing those words on the pumpkins to life.
Parking Lot – Part 3
We have spent the last couple of weeks talking about the parking lot. Again, thank you to those of you who have shared your parking lot experiences with me. With the beautiful weather that we have been enjoying, I, and a few of our staff members, decided to don our bright orange vests, and take a field trip to the parking lot to observe our school families in action.
We cooked up a little program entitled ‘Be a Parking Lot Hero’. This program is designed to reward families and students who we spotted following the parking lot rules. These students and families were doing the right thing even when no one was looking (or so they thought), because it was the right thing to do.
We are happy to offer a Pick a Day Out of Uniform Pass for the students as a token of our gratitude for being such good citizens of the ASCA parking lot, and superior examples for others to follow. We have also enjoyed having good and productive conversations with some of our school families who just needed a reminder of the expected and appropriate parking lot rules. We have great faith that, they too, can become Parking Lot Heroes!
So, in the coming weeks and months, we will be randomly coming outside to find new Parking Lot Heroes to reward. I hope that you will be one soon.
Directory Spot - ASCA's online family directory
We anticipate launching the directory this coming week. We will let you know when, what and how. Please note that you need to have an email address in SchoolSpeak to receive the directory launch information. If you do not have an email in SchoolSpeak and wish to be in the know, please edit your profile and add an email today!
Trunk or Treat
Our third annual Trunk or Treat will be held on Friday, October 26 in the parking lot outside Door 1 (Main Entrance – Welcome Desk Door) from 2:30 – 5 pm.
What is Trunk or Treat?
For anyone unfamiliar with Truck or Treat, it is a great alternative and safe way to enjoy the Trick or Treat experience with friends. Families park their cars in a parking space, and then open their trunks which are decorated with a fun theme. For amazing and creative examples of how you can decorate your trunk, simply search Trunk or Treat online. Our students then walk around the lot with their friends, trick or treating at each car.
Click here for more information. A form will also be coming home with youngest and only students. Early bird registration will take place from October 5 through October 15 at $5 per car. Please note that there is only a total of 45 spots available, and they go fast! From October 16 through October 23, registration will go up to $10 per car. No spots will be sold after October 23. There will be prizes for the top three decorated cars. Trunk or Treat will be held rain or shine! (event will be in the school gym in the event of rain).
