Saints Speak - 10/15/2020 - Together We Can

Next week, our first quarter will come to an end. We are so excited to celebrate successful in-person instruction for 25% of our school year! We look forward to having many of our virtual learners returning to in-person on October 26th, and are in the process of sharing more information with those families so they know what to expect upon their return.

As we look toward the end of the quarter, there are a few important dates to mark on your calendar. On Friday, October 30th, report cards will be sent home. IOWA test scores will be included with your child’s report card for your review. Teachers will be available to discuss report cards, test scores, and your child’s overall progress during our virtual parent-teacher conferences on Thursday, November 5th, 10:00 am-7:00 pm. As mentioned last week, conferences will be conducted virtually through Zoom this year. You may sign up for conferences through SchoolSpeak; please look for the sign up under Quick Links for your child’s homeroom (PK-5th) or grade level (6th-8th). Sign-ups will close on Monday, November 2nd.

For students in preschool-5th grade, conferences with homeroom teachers will be 15 minutes long with 5 minutes between conferences, to allow teachers time to transition from one conference to the next. Current virtual learners will be invited to conference with their Q2 homeroom teacher. Please make sure you are on time for your conference; the teachers will use the Zoom waiting room feature and let you in at your scheduled time. Parents should sign up for one conference per child only.

For students in 6th-8th grade, you will see conference sign-up forms available for each of your child’s teachers. Since each junior high teacher sees many students each day and will only be discussing one subject with you, conferences are shorter at this level – 5-minute conferences with 2-minute transitions in between. Please make sure you are on time for your conference; the teachers will use the Zoom waiting room feature and let you in at your scheduled time. Given the number of students in the junior high, it is still impossible for teachers to conference with each parent. While the teachers would love to have time with each one of you, there are over 160 students in junior high and we are unable to reasonably schedule that many conferences. Instead, we ask that you review your child’s grades in advance and only schedule conferences for those classes in which you have concerns or questions. If your child is doing well and you have no concerns or questions, we encourage you to conference with the homeroom or one core subject teacher, or to reach out via email for a simple check-in rather than scheduling a conference.

If your child works with Mrs. Carden or Mrs. Aloisio, you’ll have the option to schedule conferences with them through SchoolSpeak as well. For our specials teachers (Mrs. Breunig, PK-8th Art; Mrs. Cullum, PK-8th Music; Mrs. Hepburn, PK-5th Spanish; Mr. Lindgren, PK-8th P.E.), please contact the teacher directly via email if you would like to schedule a conference.

As we look forward to welcoming many students back to campus soon, I want to remind all parents to practice safe driving in our parking lot and follow our established protocols. We have noticed several cars driving very quickly around the back of school to approach Door 7, especially in the morning. Please remember to drive slowly and carefully; there are preschool students preparing to disembark from cars at Door 5 and staff members taking temperatures along the safety zone. Thank you for your attention to this moving forward!

Your children may have shared that we have been able to successfully stream mass to the classrooms, and we are now able to share live mass with you at home as well! You can click here to view yesterday’s mass with Fr. Don McLaughlin from Our Lady of Mercy Parish. Next Wednesday, 10/21, you can use this link to join us live for our school mass beginning at 8:15 am. Thank you for joining us for this celebration!

Lastly, October is National Bullying Prevention Month. Please review these resources from our social worker, Mrs. Magana, to better understand what bullying is and isn’t and how you can help support your children in resolving conflicts.

Warm regards,

Margie Marshall
