Saints Speak from Mrs. Marshall - 2/24/2022 - Ash Wednesday and our Lenten Journey

On Wednesday, Lent begins. As Catholics, we spend the next 40 days focusing especially on our relationship with God. We remember the time Jesus spent on earth, the suffering He experienced, and look forward to celebrating His resurrection on Easter Sunday. Our Lenten promises emphasize prayer, fasting, and almsgiving and how these three things can bring us closer in our relationship with God. Between now and Ash Wednesday, take some time to talk to your children about Lent and what Lenten promise they will make to grow closer to God.

Parents are welcome to join us for mass on Ash Wednesday at 8:15am. No advanced sign-up is needed; all parents who plan to attend should enter at Door 1 and proceed to the gym. If you aren’t able to attend mass at ASCA, check out your parish’s website or bulletin for more information on their masses and ash distribution services. If you have blessed palms at home that you would like to contribute for us to burn for ashes, please send them in a closed bag by Monday. Thank you!

At the beginning of February I shared that in recognition of Black History Month we will be focusing on Cardinal Gregory as our Person of the Month. The students have learned about Cardinal Gregory and his significance in the Catholic Church. Our 2nd and 4th grade students put together short videos to teach you about what they have learned. Thank you, 2nd grade and 4th grade! Click here for the 2nd grade video and click here for the 4th grade video.

Please check your child’s folder or backpack tomorrow (Friday), as we will be sending home a copy of the Winter NWEA MAP scores with all Kindergarten-8th grade students. As a reminder, the MAP assessment is taken three times per year in reading and in math. It is a computer-based adaptive assessment, which means that if the student gets the question correct, he/she gets a tougher question, or if the student is incorrect, he/she gets an easier question until the program pinpoints the child’s level of achievement and growth in that area. The report you’ll receive will show your child’s progress on this assessment and growth since the fall. The teachers have looked at the data in more depth to identify areas of strength and areas of focus for the last few months of the school year. The MAP assessment is one data point that we use, in conjunction with other assessments within the classroom, to measure a child’s progress. Please contact your child’s teacher for questions about his/her test results.

Last week our students in 6th and 7th grade math participated in the Illinois Math League (IML) Contest. Congratulations to our top students!
