Saints Speak – 9/26/2019 – Autumnfest, ASCA Style

Can you believe that we celebrated the first day of Fall on Monday of this week (or as it is ‘officially’ known, the Autumnal Equinox.    Can I just proclaim that I LOVE FALLI love when the day starts off cool and crisp with windows open (no air conditioner needed), just to give way to a beautiful perfect temperature afternoon, with hopefully some sun thrown in to warm us up.

I love bringing out the warm and cozy layering pieces, especially some of my favorite sweatshirts, and yes, flannel pajamas (my favorite weekend wear).  I even bought a brand new t-shirt this year (in pumpkin spice, of course) with the saying ‘Fall is my Favorite Color’

Speaking of colors, did you know that there is the something called the Fall Foliage Prediction Map that you can check out online by clicking here.  You can find out when the fall colors will peak all over the United States, just by clicking on each successive weekend from September 7 through the end of November (there is also a lot of additional fun information about fall at this site).  Very cool!

One of my favorite leaf related memories with my children was the time they (and all of their friends) brought all of the neighborhood leaves that had fallen from the trees over to our house.  Talk about a huge pile of leaves.  The kids played together for days (until it rained, and all of the wet leaves had to go away).

And for those of us who are coffee lovers, the date that the PSL (Pumpkin Spice Latte) returns to Starbucks is eagerly awaited each year (if you didn’t know, they have been available since August 27).   I hear that the new Pumpkin Spice Cold Brew is pretty good too!

Needless to say, the return of Fall brings back a lot of memories, and opportunities to make some new memories.

This Fall at All Saints, we have a brand new event with a very big title:

All Saints Autumnfest, An Oktoberfest Hosted By All Saints Catholic Academy

What is not to love?  It has everything

  • great food and drink
  • two bands with music and dancing
  • and the opportunity to come together as an All Saints school community.

We talk about ‘community’ here a lot at All Saints; but what does that mean?  So, I set out on a fact finding mission which led me to Google to ask the question,

“What does it mean to be part of a community?”

Per Google:  A community is more than just a group of people living in a particular area.  A community is a group of people we lean on when times are tough; our friends, family, and neighbors who are there for us when we need love, support, and encouragement.

I thought that this description was a wonderful way to think about our All Saints school family.  We spend a considerable amount of time with your children each day throughout the school year.  We come to know your child(ren) and your family; and, in turn, you get to know more about me, our faculty, and our staff.

You might recall that old children’s finger play that goes like this:  Here is the church.  Here is the steeple.  Open the doors, and see all the people.  A church without people is just a building.  A school without students, parents, teachers, and staff is just a building.

We all create the life, the excitement, the community, and the joy here at All Saints,

both inside and outside of our school.

I can’t think of a better way to further our relationships and sense of community than to celebrate Fall and each other at the All Saints Autumnfest.

The All Saints Autumnfest will be held here on the ASCA grounds on Saturday, October 5 from 3 -9 pm.

To take a page from the long running MasterCard advertising campaign:  Admission, dinner and a drink along with wall to wall entertainment will only set you back $30 per person.  Time spent building community, and getting to know each other better – priceless.

Simply said – for this event to be successful – WE NEED YOU!

Thanks to those of you who have already sent in your ticket order form and commitment to attend this First Annual All Saints Autumnfest.   I realize that many of you (myself included) have not yet turned in your formThis is the time to act, as the event could potentially be cancelled if there are not sufficient ticket sales.

So, please turn in your order form by the early bird deadline – this Friday, September 27 (of course, you can purchase tickets after the 27th, but why pay more?)

HOW TO ORDER TICKETS

After School Safety

It is so nice to have these beautiful Fall days when school lets out to chat with friends, and give the kids an opportunity to connect with friends after a long day at school.

On these afternoons at Door 1, I have to request that students stay near and supervised by their parent(s), as some of our students have experienced injuries while playing unattended by an adult.  Students should not be in the mulch, near the recess pad, or near the North Central College parking area.

Move Your Feet to Give a Child a Seat - Friday, October 4

In support of the Catholic Education Foundation (CEF) of the Diocese of Joliet, All Saints will once again be participating in the Move Your Feet to Give a Child a Seat campaign on Friday, October 4.  The CEF is instrumental in raising funds that assist families in affording a Catholic school education in the Diocese.  They have been very generous to All Saints, awarding over $30,000 in awards for the 2019-2020 school year to ASCA families.

On Friday, October 4, students will have the opportunity to be out of uniform in support of the CEF.  It will cost $1 to wear an out of uniform top; and $1 to wear an out of uniform bottom.  If a student wishes to be totally out of uniform on the 4th, it will cost $2.   There will be NO SPIRIT WEAR FRIDAY on Friday, October 4.  All students who are not participating in this event are expected to be in uniform.

Please bring your money on the 4th.  All monies collected will be sent to the Catholic Education Foundation.  Know that these resources are put to good use both here at All Saints and throughout the diocese.  You are most welcome to donate more than $2 to this worthy cause.  Each contribution will be greatly appreciated.

All ASCA families, students, and staff are welcome to join us.  For parents and families, a sign-up sheet will be located at the Welcome Desk.  We would appreciate people signing up to be certain that we have the entire day covered.  Times will be one hour slots from 9-3.  Even if you can only spend a short time with our Lord, please come.   Please enter through Door #1 and get a badge prior to Adoration.  Thank you, and God bless. Fall Book Fair

The Fall Book Fair continues today, Thursday, September 26 until 5 pm (please stop by); and LAST CALL on Friday from 8 – 10 am.  It has been so nice to see so many of you supporting this event. Growing a love of reading in our children is so very important.   Book Fair sales support new additions to our fabulous ASCA library.  We are so close to our goal of $9,100!   As of this afternoon, we are only $500 short of our goal.  If we are successful, the entire school will enjoy an Out of Uniform opportunity.    Please help us to reach our goal if you are able.

So, please stop by to take a look.  Think upcoming gifts for your child(ren) and others.   Think ‘what can the kids do while we are traveling over the Columbus Day holiday weekend’.  Think ‘we need a new bedtime book to enjoy’.   It is always a good day to enjoy a new book.

Grandparents Day

We are pleased to announce that Grandparents Day will once again be held just prior to Thanksgiving on Tuesday, November 26; and we look forward to welcoming all Grandparents and Special Guests into our school community.  Invitations are currently in the works but we need your help.  If you are new to ASCA or if your grandparent or special guest has moved within the past year, PLEASE take a minute to click here to complete the attached address form, or send an email to ascagrandparents@gmail.com and provide us with their name, complete mailing address and their respective students' names and grades.  Forms have also gone home in hard copy to all youngest and only students.  Completed forms may be returned to the office or front desk by the form deadline of Wednesday, October 8.

Also, we are in need of a volunteer to help compile a photo montage that will play on a loop during the event.  Photos will be provided and this can be done from home at your convenience.  We do ask that the montage be produced on a PC for compatibility purposes.

Lastly, this event is exclusively for grandparents or VIP’s in our children’s lives however, we encourage any parents that wish to be part of the day to volunteer in one of the many capacities available.  Volunteer sign up will take place in early November and as always all volunteers must have completed the PGC and background check.
