Saints Speak - 5/11/2023 - In the Silence

Please take a few minutes to reflect on today’s quote from Pope Francis:

“There is so much noise in the world! May we learn to be silent in our hearts and before God.”

Silence can be a challenge. During my first year of teaching, I participated in a weekend-long silent retreat as part of my graduate school program at Loyola. The only person I was able to talk to for the weekend was my assigned spiritual director, once per day. While the initial silence felt uncomfortable, especially while sitting at meals with friends and colleagues, the feeling then changed from discomfort to peace. I found that by making time for silence, God calmed my heart and mind so I could hear Him more clearly and better understand His will.

Here at school, our students have had increased opportunities for silence this year through visits to our chapel and Eucharistic Adoration. Making time on a regular basis to sit in silence and simply be with God is beautiful and powerful. I hope each of you can find just a few minutes in the next day or two to silence your heart and mind and let God speak to you.

Upcoming Events

These last few weeks are always busy. We continue to learn and grow academically, but we also have several special events in the coming days!

  • Tomorrow is our First Communion Mass. We will honor our 2nd grade students who have recently made their First Communion at their parishes, as many of them participate fully in the sacrament with us for the first time.
  • Monday, May 15th is our 2nd Annual Golf Outing! Thank you to the Golf Outing Committee, especially John Corradetti and Wayne Klein, for planning what looks to be a great event for our school. We look forward to seeing many of you Monday. Say a prayer for nice weather!
  • Tuesday, May 16th is our May Crowning and Living Rosary at 2:30pm in the gym. Parents are welcome to join us for this prayer service.
  • Wednesday, May 17th, the Student Council is hosting a Bake Sale after school. Baked goods will be available for $1 each at Doors 1 and 7 at dismissal time.

Looking Ahead: Field Day

Field Day for our 1st-7th grade students is Thursday, June 1st, our last full day of school. This year’s event is Olympic themed! We are still in need of a few parent volunteers, especially in the afternoon, to keep the day running smoothly. If you are able to help, please click here to volunteer. Thank you!

MAP Scores

Our K-8th grade students took the spring MAP assessment during the last week of April. Individual student reports will be sent home with your child today or tomorrow. Please contact your child's homeroom teacher with any questions. During yesterday's early release day, the faculty had time to look at these scores and discuss student progress. We look at the progress of individual students to help with planning for the coming school year and class placements, and we look at overall strengths and areas for growth as we make curricular decisions. We are grateful for these important pieces of data to inform our decisions and planning!

Upcoming Parish Event

You are invited to a special Mass at St. Thomas the Apostle for the feast of St. Dymphna on Monday, May 15th, at 7:00pm. St. Dymphna is the patron saint of anxiety and mental health. The sacrament of Anointing of the Sick will also be offered during Mass.

Happy Mother’s Day!

Happy Mother’s Day to all our ASCA mothers, grandmothers, aunts, and maternal figures! Thank you for all you do for your children. Below is a prayer to our Heavenly Mother for this special day.

Mary, on this day when we honor all mothers, we turn to you. We thank the Lord whom you serve for the great gift of motherhood. Never has it been known that anyone who sought your intercession was left unaided by grace. Dear Mother, thank you for your "Yes" to the invitation of the angel which brought heaven to earth and changed human history. You opened yourself to God's word and the Word was made flesh and dwelt among us.

Dear mother, intercede for all of our mothers. May they find daily strength to say yes to the call to the sacrificial love - the very heart of the vocation of motherhood. May their love and witness be a source of great inspiration for all of us called to follow your Son.

Mother of the Word Incarnate, pray for us. In the Name of the Father, the Son and the Holy Spirit, Amen.
