Saints Speak – 2/21/2019 – Finding Joy in the Journey

Almost 32% of parents responded to our recent survey concerning our school calendar and volunteering.  We feel that this is a good and representative sample from our school families.  Thank you to those who responded while the survey was open.  In selecting our first and last days of school, almost 61% of respondents chose the proposed days of Wednesday, August 21, and Tuesday, June 2, respectively as their preferred choices for first and last days of school.  These will be the days that you see reflected in our approved 2019-2020 school calendar.   To view next year’s calendar, please click here

Additionally, I read and carefully considered your personal responses included in the survey; and our calendar for 2019-2020 was crafted with these comments in mind.  A number of parents felt that half days were difficult to navigate, especially for families where both parents work outside the home; and I understand.  The 2019-2020 calendar only includes one half day Faculty In Service Day in February, 2020, and our early dismissal on the last day of school in June, 2020.

Concerning the question of monthly staff professional development days, over 70% of respondents preferred an early dismissal to a late start to accommodate this opportunity for our teachers.  While I feel strongly about the need for this type of development, and what it would provide for both our teachers and students, I did not include these early release/late start days in this year’s calendar.   I do hope to have further discussion on the importance of this type of investment in our teachers, and the positive outcomes that would result.

DDA 2019 – Coming Home

We are three days away from our dinner dance auction celebration, Coming Home, which will take place at All Saints this weekend.  This evening is always very special to me.  I am always astonished at the generosity and the love that is displayed by our school community in support of ASCA.   We will be welcoming almost 275 attendees to the biggest party of the year.  But, even if you will not be attending, you can still take part in the fun, and support All Saints Catholic Academy

There are many attractive items available at this year’s auction.  It is easy to take part in the online bidding, simply click here to register and take a look at what is up for bid.

Celebrating Our Student Accomplishments

Our students at All Saints are truly blessed with so many talents and gifts.  We are compiling a ‘year in review’ that will highlight all school and student accomplishments realized throughout the 2018-2019 school year.  I would like to share just one of those many achievements that happened just this past weekend at the 2019 Mathcounts competition where All Saints earned an invitation to the state championship.

On Saturday, February 16, 2019, ten students from All Saints Catholic Academy joined approximately 150 students from 18 other schools at the regional Mathcounts competition. Our ASCA group included Isabella Wojtowicz, William Jimenez, Camden Kirchgessner, Nico Posada, Tammy Zhu, Peyton Eckes, Maddie Kirchgessner, Natalie Gianan, Malia Jimenez, and Michael Budd.

As the flagship competition for middle schools nationwide, Mathcounts is a challenging competition both in terms of difficulty and level of competition as our students go head-to-head against the best from the largest public schools and private academies.  Acknowledging these challenges, All Saints finished as one of the top teams, and earned an invitation to compete in the state championship.

Of particular note:

  • All 10 of our ASCA students finished in the top half at the competition.
  • Our four person team of Natalie, Nico, Malia, and Michael out performed esteemed schools Avery Coonley and Hinsdale to qualify for the state championship.
  • Malia, Natalie, and Michael were acknowledged as having achieved honorable mentions based on their individual performance, with Michael earning a top 10 result.
  • Over the past three years, All Saints Catholic Academy is the only school of 25+ who have competed in this regional event to advance to the state championship all three years.

The students have invested a significant amount of effort this year; and it is wonderful to be able to celebrate their success.  This was easily the most challenging competition our students have ever seen.  Thanks to their preparation and their resilience in the face of the challenge, they did an amazing job and represented our ASCA community very well.   Congratulations to all members of the team!  We are proud of you!

I would also like to take this opportunity to acknowledge our many student athletes who will be competing in the basketball playoffs this weekend to earn the right to potentially advance to a championship.  All of our All Saints teams will be on the road.  Check out this week’s ASCA Weekend Sports Report on Friday, or click here to see where our Saints are playing this weekend!

Good luck to all of our basketball teams!

Parking Lot

Each day, as many of my staff members that are available may be seen in the parking lots, and at Doors 1 and 7.  Our primary responsibility is to keep our students safe as they enter and exit the school.

We are counting on our parents and other designated ‘picker up’ers and dropper off’ers’ to do their part to navigate the parking lot in accordance with the following expectations:

  • student safety in mind
  • our actual parking lot procedures, which can be viewed in our handbook (click here for the handbook)
  • respect toward other drivers

Some parents have contacted me to suggest additional staff in the parking lot to police those who may not be following the procedures.  All of my staff are already assigned duties in addition to their regular job responsibilities.  When I come out to the parking lot, everyone is on their best behavior.  When I or one of my staff members are no longer out there, people revert to their former bad behaviors.

Please review the handbook procedures, and adhere to them, not because someone is watching, but because it is the right thing to do

Spirit Wear Sunday Weekend – February 23/24

This weekend, we celebrate our first Spirit Wear Sunday weekend in our parishes.  Our places of worship where we live out our faith journey are very important and special places.  It is where we minister to others, and where we our ministered to.  Just last week, I completed training to be a Lector and Eucharistic Minister at my parish.  My son Drew also went through training to become an altar server.

I encourage you to show your school spirit this weekend by wearing something that identifies you as part of our All Saints family.  In turn, you may identify and establish a relationship with other school families, strengthening our bonds outside the walls of All Saints.  It is a great feeling to have a sense of belonging and connection with each other.    For more details about Spirit Wear Sunday, please click here.
