Saints Speak - 9/13/2018 - A Special Place to Be

This week, we commemorated the 17th anniversary of the events of September 11, 2001, where terrorists hijacked four airplanes, and carried out coordinated suicide attacks against targets in the United States.  This day has also become known as Patriot Day, a national day of service and remembrance to recognize the catastrophic events of 9/11, and the nearly 3,000 innocent people who lost their lives on this day.  I shared with our students that, for all of them, this event is a piece of our history that none of them lived through;  yet it has impacted their lives in many ways.

As I rewind 17 years to this time in my life, I can vividly recall where I was, and what I was doing.  I was at home, feeding my son Logan, who was then a baby.  I remember seeing the planes hit the towers of the World Trade Center in disbelief, wondering if I really saw a plane crash into a building.  I am sure that we all asked ourselves in those early moments, “What is happening, and why?”  I most remember the eerie and unnatural silence outside when all air traffic was grounded following the attacks, and there were no planes in the sky.   It was almost like the birds stopped flying, too.  The weather was perfect – sunny and clear, much like today; yet, everything was off.

We all shared a collective, deep sadness.   We felt anger.  We felt vulnerable.   We felt fear.  We lost our innocence.  Churches opened their doors for us to gather, to connect, to grieve, to try to make sense of it all.  During the days that followed the attacks, we all seemed to be nicer and kinder to each other.  We showed care toward each other.  It is tragic that it took an event of this magnitude to bring out these feelings in each of us.

Our virtue focus this week is caring.  How timely!  We believe that a human being is, most fundamentally, one who is called into existence by love, and called into existence to love. Saint John Paul II told us that “love is the fullest realization of the possibilities inherent in man.” Because the virtue of caring is so deeply associated with love, it comes the closest of all virtues to coinciding with it.  Loving and caring for others, intertwined, should be our ultimate objective in living our lives.

When I look around me at All Saints, I see many students each day who exhibit love and care for each other.  I see Michael and Matthew, students in first grade, who have become fast friends this school year.  These buddies have shown that they genuinely care about each other, both in the classroom and out.  As part of our New Student Mentor Program, our brand new grade 1-8 students have all been matched with student mentors who have been helping these students acclimate to All Saints, exhibiting friendship and caring along the way.

We are not perfect at All Saints; and sometimes we stumble in our words, actions and relationships.  Maybe we say the wrong thing, or unintentionally hurt the feelings of others.  This holds true for students and adults alike.  We must continue to strive to embody these virtues of caring and love, showing an attitude of gratitude in all that we do and receive.   At our first SHPP meeting, Jennifer McMahon, one of our SHPP Executive Board members, and an ASCA school parent from the very beginning back in 2005, expressed it best in saying that, “All Saints is a very special place to be.”   We are all stakeholders in shaping and realizing this vision.

Effective Communication – Part 3

I would expressly like to thank you for your attention to communications with your student’s teachers, our administration, and the school, in general, since we began this conversation.  It is important to not only keep continue to keep the lines of communication open, but to do so in a respectful, positive and affirming way.  I have received and been copied on emails that absolutely meet these objectives.  Teachers have also shared their some of their recent emails with me.  Communication is key!

Grandparents (and other Very Important People) Day

One of the greatest days that we celebrate in our All Saints school community is when we welcome some very important people to ASCA – our beloved grandparents and other VIP’s in our student’s lives.   Grandparents (VIP) Day is on Tuesday, November 20 at 12:30 pm this year.  There will be more details to come about the day itself.

Right now, all are invited to join us for a meeting on Tuesday, September 18 at 6 pm.  The mechanics of how the day is run are pretty well established; however there are many ways in which you can help to make this day successful.  Come to our first meeting to find out more.  See how you might be able to contribute your time and talents.
