Saints Speak – 10/9/19 – Parent Teacher Partnership

Children tend to do better in school when parents and teachers work together.  Research shows that students learn more, have higher grades, and have better school attendance when parents are involved in their child’s education. Those are just a few reasons why attending parent teacher conferences is so important

While the parent teacher conference is a snapshot of your student at a particular time; conversation about how he or she arrived there; and where your student is headed from here often yields very productive information, and a game plan moving forward.

At conference, parents have an opportunity to learn about their student’s academic performance and personal behavior, as well as teacher expectations. If a parent has a clear understanding of this important information, they can more easily address any issues that might arise as the school year progresses.

By attending conferences, you are sending a positive message to your child that school is important.  Keep in mind that you are an equal partner at the conference.  If you have questions or observations, the conference is a good time to discuss them with the teacher. Parents should also be willing to share what they know about their child, as this information helps the teacher better understand and teach your child.

I sincerely hope that you plan to attend our upcoming Parent Teacher Conferences, which will take place on:

  • Thursday, November 7 from 11 am to 5 pm; and 6 – 8 pm (dinner break from 5 -6 pm)

We look forward to this opportunity to meet with you.  We are grateful for having your student at All Saints, and thank you for your support each day.

Fall Conference Information

Kindergarten – Grade 5 Conferences

Signups for Kindergarten through Grade 5 conferences will take place online via SchoolSpeak.  We will be opening conference sign up in SchoolSpeak on Thursday, October 17.  Conference sign up will remain open for two weeks through Thursday, October 31.  An email with sign up instructions will be sent to all families via SchoolSpeak when sign ups become available on the 17th.  Conferences will be 15 minutes in length.

Preschool Conferences

Preschool conference scheduling will be done online via Sign Up Genius beginning on Thursday, October 17.  Instructions for sign up will be shared with families by the preschool teachers.

Junior High Conferences

Conferences for junior high students will be conducted in an arena style in the school gym.  Parents may choose to visit with some or all of the junior high and specials teachers anytime during the conference schedule.

How does arena style conferencing work?  Families can choose which teachers they wish to meet with and head to their designated area of the gym.  You do not need to schedule a specific time to meet with teachers.  Conferences will be 5 minutes in length.  They will be on a ‘first come, first served’ basis.  If you find that you need more time with a particular teacher, we ask that you schedule an additional conference at a later date in order to respect the time of the other parents who are waiting to talk with the teacher

This style of conferencing gives parents the opportunity to meet with each teacher their child has if they so choose, or just a few based on their child’s classroom performance.

We hope that you take advantage of this important time to get to know your son or daughter’s teacher(s), and to dialogue with them about how we all can work together in the best interest of your student’s success at All Saints.   Please note that students should not attend the conference unless specifically requested by the teacher.

Conference Childcare Will Be Available

Our junior high academy students from Student Voices will be providing child care in Cafe 1 for parents who are attending a conference as follows:

  • Thursday, November 7 from 11 am to 5 pm; and from 6 – 8 pm.

A huge thank you to Student Voices for giving your time to the All Saints school community on this day off of school.

How can both parent and teacher benefit from conferences?

  1. Come!  Do not miss out on this valuable time to meet with each other.
  1. Listen to each other carefully.
  1. Focus on the best interests of the student.
  1. Prepare - come to the conference with questions / be ready to discuss.
  1. Share information about the student’s strengths and needs.  Treat each other as integral parts of the planning and decision making team.
  1. Respect all opinions and suggestions.  Approach any disagreements or differences in opinion in a manner that encourages mutual problem solving and respect.

Another important communication between parent and teacher that will be coming home on Friday, November 1 with K – 8 students is their first quarter report card.  Students in grades 2 – 8 will also be receiving copies of their standardized testing scores.

All Saints Autumnfest – An Oktoberfest Hosted By All Saints Catholic Academy

Last but certainly not least, I would like to thank everyone that was involved in the planning and execution of, as well as those who attended, our All Saints Autumnfest – An Oktoberfest Hosted By All Saints Catholic Academy.

In particular, I would like to recognize our event chairs and school parents Kati and Steve Coglianese, and Jonathan and Colleen Nikiel.  Thank you for your leadership, and all of the hours that you put into creating a lovely evening.  As one of our school parents shared, “One gauge of success is whether people stayed until the end.  And they did!”

I sincerely hope that there will be a 2nd Annual All Saints Autumnfest in 2020!

Scrip (counts toward FFO)

Please note:  Due to the short week and holiday next week, Scrip orders will be processed on Tuesday, October 15, with physical cards available for pick up on Thursday, October 17.

Scrip Tip of the Week:  Some vendors offer you the ability to re-load your physical cards, up to a certain amount.  Before reloading, check if your card has a remaining balance so you don't exceed the vendor's limit.  You can check the balance of any of your cards (physical and e-cards) by going to Dashboard, then selecting My Wallet.

And just to inspire you - a few of our school families have already met their Family Fundraising Obligation through the purchase of Scrip - and it is only the beginning of October.  If they continue to purchase Scrip this school year (and why wouldn't they???), half of any future scrip earnings will become a tuition credit for the 2020-2021 school year!    That is awesome!!!

Scrip is a great fundraiser to take advantage of, as orders are placed most EVERY WEEK, allowing you to earn toward your FFO on a regular basis!   Simply click here to enroll.  Please contact the scrip team for our school's enrollment code.   Need more information? Contact scrip@ascacademy.org.
