Saints Speak from Mrs. Marshall - 10/24/2024 - Learning How to Be Good Friends
This week’s saint is St. John Berchmans. St. John lived in the early 17th century and is the patron saint of altar serves. I picked him for us this week because he is also known as the anti-gossip saint. St. John Berchmans was a very good student, but what stuck out most about his life was his ability to always find something nice to say about someone else. He would put an end to negative talk around him and make an effort to find good qualities in each of his classmates.
Take a moment to contemplate your recent behaviors and actions. Are you anti-gossip like St. John Berchmans? Do you shut down unproductive negative talk and focus on seeing Christ in others, even when they behave differently than you or frustrate you? Do you focus on facts rather than rumors? Do you keep things to yourself if they don’t need to be shared with others?
Our virtue this month is friendship, which aligns perfectly with St. John Berchmans! During our weekly Faith Buddies time, students are talking about how to be good friends to one another. We have also talked about friendship in our SEL lessons with Mrs. Magana. I’ve attached a few photos of Faith Buddies and SEL!
Halloween
Halloween is Thursday, October 31st, and we know our students are excited to celebrate! All are also welcome to join us this Saturday for Trunk or Treat, 11am-1pm in the parking lot.
On Halloween, parents are invited to our Costume Parade at 2pm on the Recess Pad, weather permitting. If weather is bad, we will send an email and move the costume parade indoors as we have done in past years. Please see more details for each Academy below.
- Preschool (Greco): Mrs. Greco’s class will celebrate on WEDNESDAY, 10/30. Students may come to school in their costumes. Parents are welcome to join us for a costume parade at 8:30 in McSherry. Class parties will be 8:45-9:45am.
- Preschool (Swanson & Sommer): Students may come to school in their costumes. Parents are welcome to join us for a costume parade at 8:30 in the gym. Class parties will be 8:45-9:45am.
- Primary Academy (K-2): Students may come to school in their costumes. Students will participate in the Costume Parade at 2pm, and class parties will be at 2:15pm.
- Intermediate Academy (3-5): Students may come to school in their costumes. Students will participate in the Costume Parade at 2pm, and class parties will be at 2:15pm.
- Junior High Academy (6-8): Student Council has planned a Halloween Social for the afternoon! Costumes will not be worn in junior high, but students may be out of uniform if they wear Halloween colors (black, orange, and purple).
For all grade levels, costumes must be appropriate for school. Costumes should be comfortable enough that students can easily sit at a desk and use the bathroom; no weapons, makeup, or masks that cover their eyes. Students are not allowed to pass out candy to one another at school due to allergies. We encourage families to participate in Trunk or Treat and distribute candy there instead!
All Saints Day
Friday, November 1st, we celebrate our Feast Day – All Saints Day! Please join us for Mass at 8:15am as we gather in prayer, remembering the saints who have gone before us and led by their example of love.
November 1st is also our 4th Annual Day of Giving! On our Feast Day we celebrate all that makes ASCA special – the students, teachers, parents, alumni, and friends of All Saints who support our mission of creating saints and scholars. On this year’s Day of Giving, help us meet our $15,000 goal. Funds raised on the Day of Giving help us maintain and continue to improve our facilities, academic offerings, and school culture. Thank you for your consideration!
Welcome, Ms. Hanford!
I am so excited to welcome Ms. Susan Hanford, who will officially join our team next week as a junior high math teacher. Ms. Hanford will be taking over the 6.1 Math and 8.2 Algebra classes previously taught by Mrs. Detwiler and myself. We are delighted to have her on board. Please read more about her below!
Ms. Hanford is looking forward to teaching mathematics at ASCA. Although she has a background in a wide range of subjects, she comes from a long line of teachers in her family and most enjoys teaching her favorite subject, mathematics. She graduated from Augustana College, in Rock Island, IL in math/computer science and education and has an MBA from Northwestern University in marketing and policy. Besides teaching mathematics at middle school, high school, and community college levels, she has worked as a systems programmer, strategic planning analyst, marketing consultant, and marketing content writer. As hobbies, she enjoys gardening, writing poetry, and playing the French horn.
In addition to raising two grown sons in Naperville, Ms. Hanford has always been active as a volunteer for organizations in the church, education, and the arts. She plays French horn in the Naperville Municipal Band and is an active member of Our Saviour’s Lutheran Church in Naperville where she is co-chair of Caring for Creation, an adult education teacher, a Bible study leader, and a member of the Sanctuary Choir and brass quintet. She believes that each student is a unique and beloved child of God and looks forward to helping each one to achieve his/her highest potential.

Health Reminders
The DuPage County Health Department has notified us of an increased number of cases of Mycoplasma Pneumonia in our area. If your child is experiencing respiratory symptoms, please contact your pediatrician for further guidance.
