Principal's Newsletter - January 22, 2014

Each year, schools are given a grade and gender of a student to represent the school at a breakfast with the Bishop and they are given the school's candle for Catholic Schools Week. This year our representative was Kyle Campbell. Kyle will process with the candle at our CSW Mass Celebration next week. Catholic Schools Week is January 26 through January 31. The schedule of events for next week is included with this newsletter.  This is always a time for us to offer thanksgiving for the sacrifice that is required to send children to a faith-filled quality education. We are grateful to our founders and our parents for making All Saints possible, and for your continued support. This would be a great week to thank your Pastor. Our three founding parishes are our biggest financial contributors and they deserve great appreciation. The theme for Catholic Schools Week is: Communities of Faith, Knowledge and Service.

School Improvement

We have been involved in quite a few initiatives as of late that are designed to help our school grow in different ways, and I would like to let you know more about them.  I personally have participated in a 3600 evaluation, we just completed our State of Illinois Accreditation reevaluation in December (and came through with flying colors), we are part of a three year process called Standards of Excellence that has prompted a great deal of examination of curriculum and practices, and the Diocese of Joliet schools are going through a diocesan-wide process called Advance Ed.  Advance Ed is a data-driven examination of all the schools in the Diocese that will culminate in a series of site visits in the fall of 2015.   This process will initiate with an online survey that should be available starting next week.  When I have the specific details and the link to the survey, I will send this out to families by way of an eblast. Thank you in advance for your help.

Martin Luther King Day Recap

Thanks to your help, we served many organizations on MLK Day. We hope this was an educational and fun day for your children. We would love to highlight your student/family’s service, so please send your photos to jazediker@comcast.net. A slideshow will be created with submitted photos. The ASCA MLK Service Project Form is due on Monday, January 27th, 2014.

Thank You

A huge thank you to Ann Zediker for all her hard work arranging service opportunities for us!

Bus Line in the Afternoon

We would like to talk about the parking lot and bus safety zone outside Door 1 (gym door with stained glass windows facing Aurora Avenue) one last time.  No one should be parked in the parking spots closest to the school (on the school side of the grassy island) between 3:00 pm and 3:45 pm.  Cars that are navigating in and out of these spaces during this time frame are creating an unsafe and extremely dangerous situation for the buses and pedestrians.

D203 Busing Change

There will be no busing home from school for District 203 bus riders on Friday, February 14.  We had quite a few families who were not aware of a recent D203 busing change that occurred last week; so, please note this change on your calendar now, and make alternative transportation arrangements home for your D203 bus rider on Friday, February 14.  All other buses will be running on that day.

Mother-Son Event – Chicago Wolves Hockey Game

The Chicago Wolves Hockey flyer was sent home last Wednesday with information about this year’s Chicago Wolves Mother-Son Event, which will take place on Saturday, February 15, 2014.  The Wolves will be playing the Milwaukee Admirals at the Allstate Arena. Tickets are $15 per person and include an ASCA/Wolves customized gray T-shirt, a Wolves winter maroon/yellow knit hat, free admittance to the pre-game fun fest in the Skyline room, and a special ASCA seating section on the lower level. The intent is for ASCA moms and sons to take part in the fun fest from 5:00 -6:30 pm; we will then move to a block of seats for the game which begins at 7:00 pm.  It is important that forms with payment are returned to the ASCA office by this Friday, January 24, 2014.  If there are any questions, please contact Betsy Knox at betsy.knox@alcatel-lucent.com.  Last year, the boys and moms had a BLAST!  Do not miss this fun event; send in your form and payment today!

5th Grade and 4th Grade Father/Son and Mother/Daughter Puberty Presentations RSVP’s are Due

The SHPP Faith Formation Committee has invited Dr. Coleen Mast, a leader in the field of chastity education, to offer her popular “Puberty Presentations for Father/Son and Mother/Daughter” to Fifth Grade students and their parents on Thursday, February 6th from 7:00-9:00 pm. This is an excellent opportunity for 5th grade families to prepare for their mandatory academic and ongoing puberty changes discussions. The talks consist of two simultaneous two hour presentations in two different rooms; the girls led by Dr. Mast, and the boys led by a pro-life man. The Puberty Presentations will include videos and discussions on how to mature spiritually and emotionally while these physical changes are taking place. The presentation will include some theology and biology of the body, with practical advice for puberty and virtue challenges.

The Mother/Daughter session will be held in McSherry Hall, and the Father/Son presentation will take place in Café 1. Please note that, while this is a 5th grade specific program, 4th grade parents are welcome to attend and bringing their 4th grade child along will be up to parental discretion. This opportunity will not be offered next year, as it will only be offered every other academic year.

There is no cost to attend the event, and no food will be offered during these sessions. For more information about Dr. Mast, please visit www.sexrespect.comFor questions or to RSVP, please contact ascapubertytalk2014@yahoo.com indicating names of parent and student and grade level.
