Saints Speak - September 28, 2016

Saints Speak

From Mrs. Santos

September 28, 2016

This afternoon, we had our first unannounced fire drill with alarm.  These drills can be scary, especially for our younger students.  It is important to practice what we would do in an emergency so that we can keep everyone safe.  During the drill, students need to listen for direction from their teacher and from other staff.  They need to focus on the proper procedure to exit the building during a drill.  If there was a real fire, this training will help us to react and perform how we have practiced.  Ensuring the safety of our students, staff and volunteers is the most important thing that we do at All Saints

In our drills, we must account for all of our staff and students.  This also extends to any volunteers in the building.  We ask that you remember to sign both in and out whenever you visit the school.   If you are here during a drill, please check in with a staff member.  We will be looking for you if you are signed in.

Another area where we must exercise caution for the well-being and safety of our students is in the area of medication.  Often times, an over the counter medication is necessary to be administered to a student during the school day.  The school must have written authorization from a parent that will allow us or their designee to give the medication to a student.  This authorization must include dosage information.  If you have any questions regarding medication, please contact Pat Ann Rotko, our Health Attendant.

Also, Fall has officially arrived, and with it, the cold and ‘flu season.  One of the first lines of defense to keep students safe and healthy is good hand washing.  Please remind your child to regularly wash their hands with soap in the school restrooms and use hand sanitizer at school, especially in the cafeteria before they eat.  To make sure a student has scrubbed their hands for the proper length of time, they should sing a song to themselves like the ABC’s or Twinkle Twinkle Little Star.

The main cafeteria has a hand sanitizer dispenser by each entrance, and all classrooms are equipped as well.  Students need to practice good procedures when coughing or sneezing, making sure to cover their mouths and noses.  If a tissue is not available, students should cough/sneeze into the crook of their elbows. Practice this with your child before they need to use it.

Dinner Dance Auction - DDA

A letter will be coming home with all oldest and only students on Wednesday, September 28 explaining the School Wide Auction Basket Collection.  In an effort to streamline, we will be creating School Wide Auction baskets in lieu of the grade level baskets that were raffled off last year. The monetary donations that are collected will be used to purchase items for the baskets.  Your support of these fun-filled baskets last year made it a huge success!

From September 28 through October 14, we will be collecting monetary donations from our school families.  This year, we will be using FACTS to collect all donations, making it even easier to donate!!  We are hoping that all families can participate in a small way to help make our auction successful!

Thank you for supporting the 2017 Dinner Dance Auction, which will be held at the Embassy Suites in Naperville on Saturday, March 18, 2017.  Please plan on joining us for this evening to celebrate All Saints!

The Fall Book Fair is Almost Here

Arrrrrr you ready for the book fair??? The "Bookaneer" themed book fair will soon be here! Students will be able to preview the book fair on Tuesday, October 11th. They will have the opportunity to participate in contests to win prizes such as posters and books. The book fair will be open for sales Wednesday, October 12th through Friday, October 14th. Our teachers and librarian will be pulling books for their "Wish Lists". These books will be available for purchase and presented in the classroom by your child to their teacher.

100% of the profits from the book fair benefit the school library. Our sales goal for the book fair is $9,500. When we reach our goal, students will be awarded with an ALL SCHOOL OUT OF UNIFORM DAY! Out with the old, in with the new….a donation box will be available to collect gently used books, which will be donated to SCARCE. Flyers with additional details are being sent home with the students today.

Field Trips at All Saints

Most field trips at All Saints are handled electronically via each family’s FACTS account.  When a field trip is planned, each family will receive an email notification with an electronic permission form attached.  This form must be completed and submitted online.  The fee for the field trip will also be billed to your FACTS account at this time.  Field trip payments (invoiced via Incidental Billing) work a little bit differently than your tuition payments which automatically come out of most school family’s accounts.

If you have elected auto pay for incidental billing, the field trip payment will automatically come out of your account 10 days from date of invoice.  If you have not elected auto pay for incidental billing, you will have to initiate payment of field trip fees by the invoice due date (10 days from date of billing).  If you have any questions about field trip forms or fees, please contact Helen Kolar in the school office.

Seeking Parents Interested in Social Media

If you really enjoy communicating via Facebook or Twitter, we are interested in talking with you!  It is important that All Saints has a strong social media presence to highlight all of the wonderful things that are happening at All Saints, as well as to attract new school families.  If you would like to be involved with promoting ASCA via social media, please contact Melissa Santos at msantos@ascacademy.org, or Patty Bajek at pbajek@ascacademy.org

Saints In Action

Move Your Feet to Give a Child a Seat

The Catholic Education Foundation (CEF) of the Diocese of Joliet will be holding the 3rd annual Move Your Feet to Give a Child a Seat event on Friday, October 14.  The CEF awards over a million dollars in scholarship assistance to students attending Catholic schools throughout the Diocese each year.  All Saints has been the recipient of a generous amount of these monies that directly help many of our school families.  Since 2014, this event has funded 102 new student scholarships totaling over $71,000.  Every dollar shared goes directly to educate a child in need!

On Friday, October 14, students may participate in an Out of Uniform Day at ASCA in support of Move Your Feet to Give a Child a Seat and Catholic Education Foundation.  We are asking that each student bring in a small donation ($1 is suggested, more is welcome if you are able) to be out of uniform, which will be sent to the CEF.  Please contact Patty Bajek if you have any questions.

Outdoor Luminary Mass at SS Peter and Paul Cemetery

The 22nd annual “Light of My Life” outdoor Mass will be held in Sts. Peter & Paul Cemetery, corner of Columbia and North Ave., Naperville, on Sunday, October 9 at 6:15 pm.  This mass fulfills your Sunday obligation, so bring the family.  The intention ("Light of My Life"  form attached) of this evening is to dedicate a luminaria as a silent tribute to any person(s) who may have touched your life in a special way, deceased or living, past or present.  Bring your own chairs or a blanket to sit on.  All Are Welcome!

International Pilgrim Virgin Statue – Our Lady of Fatima at St. Dominic

The International Pilgrim Virgin Statue of Our Lady of Fatima will be at St. Dominic in Bolingbrook on Monday, October 3.  All are welcome to visit and pray.  Please see the attached Our Lady of Fatima schedule

Saints Having Fun

Halloween Parties and Parade

Just in case you have not heard, our students will be sharing the fun of dressing up in costumes for Halloween at school, along with having a class party.  Preschool through grade 5 will be able to wear a costume and participate in a Halloween Parade.  Grade 6 through Grade 8 will have more age appropriate activities to enjoy on this day.  Please look for additional information and guidelines to come.

Trunk or Treat

All Saints will be hosting Trunk or Treat in the ASCA parking lot on Friday, October 28 from 4 – 5 pm with fun for all!  What is Trunk or Treat?   Students in costume go from car/trunk to trunk for treats in a safe and fun environment.  All of our creative parents will decorate their trunks (prize for the best decorated trunk).  Students will be able to change into costume after school.

An information flyer is coming home soon with all of the details on how you can participate.  Meanwhile, save the date, and check out all of the fun trunk decorating ideas on Pinterest and Google Images.

What’s New at Recess?

Here are just a few of the ways that our students are having fun this school year at recess.

1.  Soccer nets for the kids (a big thank you to parents who have donated nets!!)
2.  Footballs, a badminton net, playing football or soccer on the big grass area.
3.  Plastic balls (light weight so no one gets hurt) volleyballs & basketballs.
4.  Hula hoops, jump ropes, Chinese jump ropes (a big thank you to parents who have donated jump ropes!!) and chalk.

Next, new choices for our junior high students!!  They can elect to go outside for recess, have a study hall in the library, or stay inside and go to the gym during lunch recess.

These changes have truly changed our recesses, bringing joy and fun for all of our students.  Thank you to SHPP, to all of our recess volunteers, and to our principal, Mrs. Santos for helping to make all of this happen!
