Principal's Newsletter - September 11, 2013

Pray for softer hearts. Fr Paul spoke to this at Mass this weekend. He wove that message into an understanding of how difficult it is to give up the things that we so want to truly take up the work that Jesus teaches us is ours to do. A wonderful example of this is the approach to the crisis in Syria that is being modeled for us by the Holy Father.  In our secular political world, there are cries of ‘Act now!’  Cries of ‘No…don’t drag us into something that we will regret later.’  Demands to punish the leader of Syria.  Demands to arm the rebels.  All of this is wrapped around the horrific deaths of families seemingly by the very leadership that they trusted.  Pope Francis has asked us to turn to prayer and fasting while the secular world considers further violence as the condemnation.   Here at ASCA, we joined Catholic schools around the world in praying for the victims, and praying for softer hearts.  We will continue this prayer throughout the coming week as our government searches for wisdom as they decide on a reaction to this unthinkable act. The Holy Father shows us that we all have the work of Jesus to do; and right now, it is to sincerely pray for softer hearts.  Please join your children in prayer this week.

News from Campus Ministry

Each Wednesday morning, our school community gathers for the most important facet of our week…we celebrate the Eucharist as one body in Christ.  Parents who are commissioned as Extraordinary Ministers of the Eucharist in their parish are invited to also participate as a Minister of the Eucharist.  Please contact Mrs. Patti Stock, Campus Minister, at pstock@ascacademy.org about this ministry.

Campus Ministry would also appreciate assistance with the maintenance of the smaller liturgical linens which are used at Mass.  This is a very simple and easy volunteer opportunity!   Please contact Mrs. Stock if you are able to help.

What we celebrate each week at Mass sustains us not only for a day, or a week, but for a lifetime.  Join us in prayer each Wednesday at 8:15 am.

Wednesday Rosary

Our Rosary has resumed in the Our Lady of Perpetual Help Reflection Chapel (located across from the school gym) at 7:50 am before Wednesday school mass. Praying the rosary is a great way to receive additional graces, to meet other parents, and to honor Mary, our spiritual mother.

Instruction sheets and extra Rosaries are always available. Kids (even noisy ones) are welcome!  So, we look forward to you joining us each Wednesday morning, beginning next Wednesday, September 11, at 7:50 am.  Please contact Darlene Newman at newmdar@gmail.com with any questions.

Community Outreach

During the month of September, Community Outreach will be collecting musical instruments in good condition. Instead of collecting dust, give the precious gift of music to a child. All donations can be brought to the ASCA office. The instruments will be donated to local students. “Music gives a soul to the universe, wings to the mind, flight to the imagination and life to everything.” ― Plato.  Please contact Ann Zediker at jazediker@comcast.net with any questions.

A huge thanks is going out to the children of ASCA for making cards for Operation Support Our Troops in honor of 9/11. This project was led by our amazing art teachers, Mrs. Smith and Mrs. Peterson. The cards of appreciation will be sent to the troops via Catholic Charities, and should arrive near Christmas.

Food Allergy Documentary

Thank you so much to all the parents sending wipes for your child when they have peanut butter or tree nut products.  We so appreciate your help in making ASCA a safe environment.  To help you to better understand just how serious dealing with food allergies can be for families, FARE has teamed up with The Discovery Channel to produce a new documentary about food allergies called “An Emerging Epidemic: Food Allergies in America.” The hour-long documentary, narrated by Steve Carell, explores what it is like to live with life-threatening food allergies, how families and individuals managing food allergies are working to raise awareness in their communities, and the vital research underway to find effective treatments and a cure.  The link is: http://www.discoverychannelcme.com/patient-education/food-allergies   Please give it a look!

Move Your Feet Campaign

The Catholic Education Foundation is sponsoring a campaign called “Move your feet to give a child a seat” to raise money for scholarships throughout the Diocese of Joliet.  ASCA is not able to participate directly because we have a commitment on the date (October 18th) as well as our commitment not to ask students to be the active solicitors of money for our campaigns.  That said, this is a worthy cause, and if you would like to help with the efforts of our Diocese to fund students in need, please contact jlangenderfer@dioceseofjoliet.org. Your consideration is appreciated.
