Saints Speak - October 5, 2016

Saints Speak

From Mrs. Santos

October 5, 2016

In a couple of weeks, the first quarter will end on Thursday, October 20.  Report cards will go home the following Wednesday.  A report card is a snapshot in time that measures your student’s performance and progress.  Through our mission statement, we know that All Saints partners with parents to nurture future leaders through the formation and education of each child in spirit, mind and body.  It is a relationship with the best interest of each student at the heart of our focus.

On November 3 and 4, we look forward to our Fall Parent Teacher Conferences.  Student success takes the committed actions of both families and schools working together to support students in their academic, social and emotional growth.  This is a shared responsibility.  We reach out to and engage families in meaningful ways in their child’s educational journey.  Similarly, families must do their part to actively support their child’s learning and development.

Preschool through grade 5 conferences on these days will be similar to how they have been structured in the past.  Families will have the opportunity to sign up for a 15 minute conference with their student’s homeroom teacher.  The online sign up for conference times will begin on Monday, October 24

Conferences for junior high students will look a little bit different to how they have taken place in the past.  Junior high conferences will be conducted in an arena style.  Instead of signing up for a conference with only your junior high student’s homeroom teacher, conferences will be open for parents to visit with some or all of the junior high and specials teachers anytime during the conference schedule.

How will this work?  Families can choose which teachers they wish to meet with and head to their designated areas of the school.  You do not need to schedule a specific time to meet with teachers.  Conferences will be 5 minutes in length.  They will be on a ‘first come, first served’ basis.  This will give parents the opportunity to meet with each teacher their child has if they so choose, or just a few based on their child’s classroom performance.

We hope that you take advantage of this time to get to know your son or daughter’s teachers, and to talk about what can be done to ensure a successful school experience.

The Fall Book Fair Begins on Tuesday, October 11

Students will preview the book fair on Tuesday, October 11th. Book Fair hours are as follows:

Tuesday, October 11:  Preview Day

Wednesday, October 12:  9:15 am – 11 am; 1 – 6 pm

Thursday, October 13:  8 – 11 am; 1 – 5 pm

Friday, October 14:  Last Day of Fair, 8 – 10 am

Did you know that 100% of the profits from the book fair will benefit our school library.  Our sales goal for the book fair is $9,500. When we reach our goal, students will be awarded with an ALL SCHOOL OUT OF UNIFORM DAY!

We will also be collecting gently used books which will be donated to SCARCE. So, plan on making room in your book case for your new books by helping those in need with your old books!

Your child’s teacher may have some "Wish List" books. If you would like to purchase a wish list book for a teacher and make a contribution in this way, please ask a volunteer at the book fair.  The will be happy to help you.

A book fair takes a lot of volunteer help.  We need assistance with setup and take down of merchandise displays, helping students and parents make book selections, escorting children to and from classrooms to the fair, and processing sales. We appreciate all of our wonderful volunteers.  Signing up couldn't be easier.  If you would like to volunteer, please click on the following SignUpGenius link:  http://www.signupgenius.com/go/20f0d4eaeab2aab9-asca3.  Please note that you must have completed Protecting God's Children to volunteer.  Please contact Maryanne Higdon in the school office with any questions about Protecting God's Children.

If you have any questions about the book fair, please contact Book Fair Co-Chairs Kathy Kokkinos (flyinchippy@yahoo.com) or Cristine Shaw ( cristineshaw@gmail.com).  Thank you in advance for your help!

See you at the Fair!!!!

Dinner Dance Auction – DDA

The School Wide Auction Basket Collection continues through next Friday, October 14.  In an effort to streamline, we are creating School Wide Auction baskets in lieu of the grade level baskets that were raffled off last year. The monetary donations that are collected will be used to purchase items for the baskets.  Your support of these fun-filled baskets last year made it a huge success!

This year, we will be using FACTS to collect all donations, making it even easier to donate!!  We are hoping that all families can participate in a small way to help make our auction successful!

Thank you for supporting the 2017 Dinner Dance Auction, which will be held at the Embassy Suites in Naperville on Saturday, March 18, 2017.  Please plan on joining us for this evening to celebrate All Saints!

Saints In Action

Move Your Feet to Give a Child a Seat – Friday, October 14

On Friday, October 14, students may participate in an Out of Uniform Day at ASCA in support of Move Your Feet to Give a Child a Seat and the Catholic Education Foundation.  We are asking that each student bring in a small donation ($1 is suggested, more is welcome if you are able) to be out of uniform, which will be sent to the CEF.  Please contact Patty Bajek if you have any questions.

The Catholic Education Foundation (CEF) of the Diocese of Joliet awards over a million dollars in scholarship assistance to students attending Catholic schools throughout the Diocese each year, and All Saints has been the recipient of a generous amount of these funds.  We are grateful to them for their support of All Saints students and families.

Outdoor Luminary Mass at SS Peter and Paul Cemetery

The 22nd annual “Light of My Life” outdoor Mass will be held in Sts. Peter & Paul Cemetery, corner of Columbia and North Ave., Naperville, on Sunday, October 9 at 6:15 pm.  This mass fulfills your Sunday obligation, so bring the family.  The intention ("Light of My Life"  form attached) of this evening is to dedicate a luminaria as a silent tribute to any person(s) who may have touched your life in a special way, deceased or living, past or present.  Bring your own chairs or a blanket to sit on.  All Are Welcome!

District 203 Seeking Input from All Saints Families

Naperville Community Unit School District 203 is taking a look at its yearly calendar and school day schedules to determine how to optimize student learning and better serve district families.  They are examining whether a later start time could improve student performance, and whether children could benefit from more instruction in a school day.  They are seeking input on these and other questions from all constituents who reside within D203 boundaries.  If you meet this criteria, please take the online survey by going to http://tiny.cc/D203SchoolDay.  All responses are strictly confidential.

Saints Having Fun

Halloween Parties and Parade

Just in case you have not heard, our students will be sharing the fun of dressing up in costumes for Halloween at school, along with having a class party.  Preschool through grade 5 will be able to wear a costume and participate in a Halloween Parade.  Grade 6 through Grade 8 will have more age appropriate activities to enjoy on this day.  Please look for additional information and guidelines to come.

Trunk or Treat

All Saints will be hosting Trunk or Treat in the ASCA parking lot on Friday, October 28 from 4 – 5 pm with fun for all!  What is Trunk or Treat?   Students in costume go from car/trunk to trunk for treats in a safe and fun environment.  All of our creative parents will decorate their trunks (prize for the best decorated trunk).  Students will be able to change into costume after school.

The information flyer on how you can join the fun is coming home soon with all of the details.  Meanwhile, save the date, and check out all of the fun trunk decorating ideas on Pinterest and Google Images.

Saints Helping Saints

National Vocations Awareness Week

National Vocations Awareness Week will be celebrated November 6-12, 2016.  Oftentimes, a vocation is thought of in a religious sense; however, we are all called to a vocation in life.

We would like to invite a priest, seminarian, sister or brother to visit All Saints during this week to address our student body.  But we are also looking to present speakers about other life’s vocations as well.  These speakers would be represented by our parents, our grandparents, our alumni, our founders, our supporters.

If you are interested in finding out more and being a part of this very special week, please contact Melissa Santos at msantos@ascacademy.org, or (630) 961-6125.

As the season ends, the ASCA XC team wishes our graduating 8th grade runners and Coach Jimmy Watson (ASCA Class of 2013) all the best as they end their time with All Saints. Congratulations to all ASCA Cross Country runners for a terrific season!

All Saints Football and Cheerleading

This past weekend, our JV team lost a hard fought battle to St. Thecla; however, the All Saints Varsity was victorious.  Keep up the great work!

The cheerleaders recently attended Cheer Spirit Day, hosted by St. Agnes.  The day was filled with team building events, learning new cheers, performing half time routines and dances, and making new friends.  The cheerleaders will be wearing pink bows during the month of October in honor of Breast Cancer Awareness month.  Thank you to the ASCA Cheerleaders for their ‘cheerful’ support of the All Saints football teams, rain or shine.
