Principal's Newsletter - October 30, 2013

All Saints Day is very special for us at ASCA, as it is our feast day. We enjoy a rich set of examples of people throughout the centuries who have been able to be the prayerful, others-centered people – people that we all hope we are able to be.  Ask your children to share with you the stories of what these average normal folks were able to do when they let God be their guide.

All Souls Day on November 2nd continues the reflection, giving us a moment in time to be grateful for our personal saints who have gone before us.  For you personally, it might have been your mom or dad, or a favorite aunt.  At my age, I have lost both of my parents; and my husband died at the age of 46 while my children were still young.  I use the word “lost” because that is exactly how I felt as each of these people passed; ….but now, years later, I realize that they are still hugely a part of my life.  They have never left me…….just as Jesus never left us after his death.  It creates an obligation for me. As long as I am here, sharing all that these people were when they were here on earth, they still live on.  Share all that you can with your children so that they know their family that has gone before ….they will live forever in that way.

Ways to Celebrate Halloween (From the St. Thomas Parish Bulletin)

With Halloween being such a big event with our children and adults alike, here are some ways to celebrate keeping our faith in mind on this day:

1.    Tell your children that Halloween can be a festive day to "kick off" the celebration of All Saints Day. We ask the saints to pray for us.

2.    Research a saint and dress up as it.

3.    During a meal or at bedtime, recite a short litany of family members who have died and whom you remember in your prayers. After each name, have everyone say, "Pray for us".

4.    Make a special meal every year for dinner, maybe the same meal, to be your family's tradition for Halloween.

5.    Halloween comes from the word "hallowed" which means "blessed or holy." Halloween is the night that anticipates the celebration of our living connection with all the faithful who have lived and died before us. So the night before All Saints Day, let's remember and celebrate our belief in the Communion (close connection) of Saints in our own lives.

The True Meaning of the Rosary

Thursday, November 14th, from 7:00 – 8:30 pm in McSherry Hall

The rosary is one of the most widespread devotions in the Catholic faith.   Catholics are usually associated with the rosary and devotion to the Virgin Mary.   The origins of this common, yet controversial devotion are surprising.  Why have saints and visionaries throughout the centuries stressed the importance and power of these seemingly repetitious prayers?  What effect does the rosary possess for us today?  And, is the rosary one of the remedies of peace and calm amid so many social ills?  These and other questions will be examined as we delve into the true meaning and purpose of this devotion.  The evening will culminate with the praying of the Rosary.  Please contact Anne-Marie Cronin at anne.marie.cronin@sbcglobal.net with any questions.

Healthy Tips from Mrs. Loscheider

  • Here is your Halloween tip - Have your ghost or goblin eat an early dinner/snack.  They will tend to eat less candy once they return home from trick or treating.  Have a safe evening.
  • When was your last Family fire drill?  Observe your children and your pets.  Pets will hide.  Will your child reenter your home to retrieve the pet?
  • This is also a good time to have your furnace checked, along with filters and batteries for alarms too.
