Principal's Newsletter - May 15, 2013

This time of year we have much to celebrate at All Saints Catholic Academy. The second graders have made their First Communion and had their school celebration. Our second grade classes went to visit the Cathedral of St. Raymond the day before their celebration, and then on Wednesday, wore their special Communion clothes and celebrated here at school. When the Mass was over they changed into their uniforms, and offered an act of service to our kindergarten students by going to their class and reading to them. We are very proud of them.

We will also be graduating our fifth class from All Saints Catholic Academy on Friday, May 24th.  For our 52 graduates, this will culminate several weeks of events leading to graduation.  They have been taking ballroom dancing lessons, they will visit the Jacob Henry Mansion to learn dining etiquette and manners, and they have built a beautiful outdoor rosary as their legacy to the school. During the week leading up to their graduation, they will have a day to share together in Chicago that includes a Blue Man Group performance, a boat architectural tour of the city, a visit to “the Bean” and Millennium Park, lunch at Sopranos and dinner at Dave and Busters.   The day following their trip into the city, they will celebrate Mass with the Superintendent of Schools, and share breakfast with the seventh graders. That afternoon, they will have a yearbook signing party.  Then on Friday evening, they will attend their Graduation Mass, and officially become graduates of All Saints Catholic Academy.  Of the 52 Class of 2013 eighth grade students, 38 will be going on to Catholic high schools.

Both of these milestones are important for our students; one sacramental and one a rite of passage. In both, they carry the character and faith nurtured in their time here at All Saints Catholic Academy. I ask our entire community to pray for both of these classes in these moments of celebration.

Community News

Gym Shoes

Huge thanks to all the families who donated gym shoes.  We completely filled up one minivan with the donations.  They will be making a huge impact locally, and even globally as SCARCE will be sending some wearable shoes to two Indian reservations in South Dakota and even a project in the Congo.

What is going on with the trees?

Have you seen the ASCA new flowering pear tree planted by our K-3rd graders near the flagpole?  SHPP generously donated the funds so our children could participate in Arbor Day and watch the small tree grow, just like them.  The preschoolers are involved as well by keeping our tree watered!

The 4th graders also had an Arbor Day project – tagging some ASCA trees.  We were able to get a free kit from the Morton Arboretum.  The students went on-line, entered the type of tree, and were able to determine the yearly environmental savings by having the tree.  They were also able to learn fun facts about trees like which trees increase property value.

Dreading Desk and Locker Leftovers?

What do you with all the used school supplies the kids come home with as the year starts winding down?  Toss most of it out?  Wouldn’t it be great to spare our drawers and closets from overflowing, and instead donate these items to be reused and recycled?

Please join ASCA in supporting the School and Community Assistance for Recycling and Composting Education (SCARCE) – Tools for Schools Program (TFS)

SCARCE is dedicated to educating students, teachers, residents, businesses, and the general public to conserve natural resources and energy, prevent pollution, reduce waste, recycle, and compost organic materials, so that together we can make a difference; we can protect the environment and work toward a sustainable future for our community.

When:  Now through May 30th

What:  Fill out the school supply donation form for SCARCE.  The form designates what items your child should bring home vs. keep at ASCA for donation to SCARCE.  Send this form to your child’s teacher.  Each classroom will have a collection box.  Or if you have a simple request of either sending all the items home or ASCA keeping all of them for donation, feel free to e-mail your teacher instead and recycle the checklist.

Once collected, these items will be taken to SCARCE.  Then what…

75% of the donated items are distributed to low income schools, alternative schools, and special education programs in Illinois.  The remaining 25% of items are sent to schools, orphanages, hospitals, libraries and youth centers around the world. – including Ghana, Kenya, China, India, Ethiopia, Lithuania, Columbia, Honduras, Costa Rica, Rwanda, Uganda and many more.  Since its inception in 2002, SCARCE’s Tools for Schools Program has diverted over 1,000,000 supplies from the landfill.

Even crayons have a special purpose!  SCARCE will peel, sort and melt the broken and used crayons in a crock pot.  They will then be poured into special molds to form large crayons to be used by children with special needs.  Any whole crayons received will be sorted into sets for underprivileged children.

If you have any questions please contact Bridget Roe at roeyerboat@yahoo.com.

SCARCE forms will be going home with all oldest and only students today, and can also be found at the ASCA website.
