Principal's Newsletter - March 12, 2014

During Lent, we are trying hard to keep it simple and peaceful so we can be reflective. Then we find that Lent is really about choices. Serious choices.  What should we give up? How much time should we spend praying? What about fasting? What if I forget? Should I just give up?

We must focus instead on what God wants to do for us.    Not what we want to do; but what he wants to do for us.  Are we open? Our heavenly Father is with us day in and day out, offering us grace upon grace so that we can choose His way every time.  God wants to bless you. He wants to do everything he can to keep you on His path of life. That’s why He is so merciful and forgiving. So don’t give up. Choose God every day. He has chosen you.

A Note from Mrs. Grissinger

Dear All Saints staff, students, and families,

Last week I received the donation that was collected at ASCA for Kevin's daughters' college fund; and my family is deeply grateful for all your generosity! Your gift brightened our day and it will continue to grow in an account for Alexa's and Amelia's college expenses. We truly appreciate your thoughtfulness and all the kind support, thoughts, and prayers that you have shared with us. The outpouring of kindness from students, staff, and ASCA families has been humbling and a powerful force from the ASCA faith community.

Thank you all from the bottom of our hearts, Jean Grissinger and Family

2014 March Madness Dinner Dance Auction

The March Madness dinner dance auction is just a few days away.  Catalogs for attendees were sent home yesterday in your oldest/only child's backpack. Please look for it and remember to bring it to the auction on Saturday as this has your bid number on it and will be used for the live auction.  The auction begins at 6:00 pm at Bobak's Signature Room at Seven Bridges in Woodridge.  We look forward to seeing you there for a great evening.

If you have filled out a donation form for an item you have contributed to the auction but have not brought in the actual item yet, please deliver your item to Tim Traynor ASAP.

We are still looking for a few volunteers to help sell our various raffle tickets.  There are two half hour shifts, 6:00-6:30 pm, and 6:30-7:00 pm.  If you can help with a shift, please email Maria Gulli at pmgulli@comcast.net with your preference.  Thank you for your help.

Tuition Credit Raffle Tickets

Today is the final day to purchase Tuition Credit Raffle tickets.  Sales end at 4:00 pm on March 13th.  You can bring a check into the office, attention Tim Traynor, or purchase your ticket on our website at www.ascadda.org.  This is a great way to support our school and auction even if you cannot attend.

Attention ASCA Basketball Players

Would you love the opportunity to play your favorite ASCA teachers in a basketball game?  Well here is your chance!  At this year's dinner dance live auction, for the very first time we will be offering a ASCA student team of 10 players the chance to play the ASCA staff team on April 7, 2014 at 2:00 pm in the ASCA gym in front of their fellow students grade 2nd and up.  So start to put together a team, figure out what you are willing to bid, attend the DDA and participate in the Live Auction.  The game is sure to be a blast.  Go Saints!

Market Day on March 19th

Our next Market Day will be held on Wednesday, March 19th, with product pick-up from 2:30 - 3:30 pm in the gym (enter through Door 9). As a reminder, at least 10% of your pre-tax order will be credited to your annual fundraising commitment.  This month is Dessert Bonus Days.  The more desserts purchased, the more we earn!  This is the first Market Day of the 2014-2015 school year; starting in March each year, proceeds are credited to the coming year. You are encouraged to place your order at www.marketday.com and pay by credit card.  The deadline for internet orders is Saturday, March 15th, at 11:00 pm.  All Saints Catholic Academy's school code is 27119.  Volunteers are needed to help sort and stack the food. Please contact Tracy Coleman at tracytroy@aol.com if you are able to help.

The Car Line

We are revisiting the clarification of our car line procedures once again in a sincere effort to communicate the appropriate parking lot procedures for the safety of our children.

  1. Last year the Naperville Police Department  did a traffic analysis and recommended that at high exit times like AM and PM  drop-off and pick up, we restrict our exit to right turns only.  The signage indicating this went up this fall. These directions should be followed.  This change has not yet been reflected in the on-line Parent Handbook; but we will take care of that shortly.
  2. Both AM and PM we have a high volume of cars that are on the grounds in the line to reach the child safety zone.  You are to double up and once the line starts (if you don’t, vehicles will spill out onto Aurora Ave.), and then you should alternate when the line moves into a single line.
  3. Remember Door 1 is not a place where you can “drop-off”. If you go to the Door 1 lot, you must park and walk your child to and from Door 7.
  4. Cell phone usage while children are present is a dangerous thing. Please don’t do it.

ASCA Lenten Service Project – Hogar del Pobre

During Lent, All Saints students and their families will continue to support the Hogar del Pobre orphanage in Celaya, Mexico.  All Saints will be praying for and helping the children of the orphanage with a clothing collection.  For most of the children at the orphanage, the clothing that they receive from All Saints students will be the only new outfit that they receive all year long.  In past years, All Saints families have generously been able to contribute over 700 pieces of clothing during the forty days of Lent.  We have attached the Lenten Service Project flyer which outlines the details of the project.  This flyer will also be going home in hard copy to oldest and only students today, and be available at the school website.  There is a wonderful Powerpoint presentation currently playing outside the gym that highlights the orphanage.  Please be sure to take a look when you visit the building.  Thank you in advance for your generous contributions.

Please note that items must be new with tags attached, and can be purchased from any store and made in any country, including China.  The orphanage is located in an area of Mexico where it gets very cold at night without heat.  Warm clothing is their greatest need.  Shoes, jackets, pajamas, socks and underwear is needed too.

Even though we have assigned each grade level a size, you are welcome to bring in any size.

In looking outside of ourselves and in developing an awareness of others and their true needs, our students learn and experience how it is to be Christ's loving hands and hearts when doing small things with great love!

FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

What is head lice?

Head lice, Pediculus Capitis, are parasites that spend their entire lives on the human scalp. They cling to the hair while feeding, mating and laying eggs. Head lice are most commonly found on individuals with good hygiene and grooming habits. Head lice are bloodsucking, wing-less insects with a hard exoskeleton and three pairs of legs ending in claws. An adult louse is 2 to 3 mm long (the size of a sesame seed).

There are 3 life stages for lice – egg, baby and adult. The egg (nit) is attached to the human hair with extremely strong glue. Female lice lay approximately 5 eggs twice a day. The eggs incubate for 7 to 10 days. After hatching, the baby lice (nymph) grow into adults within 7 to 10 days. Once full-grown the female lice have to only mate once to lay eggs every day for the rest of their 30 day life.

How can I get head lice?

98% of all head lice transfers are from head-to-head contact (hugging, reading a book together, etc…). Head lice cannot jump or fly and you cannot get or give head lice to your pets. However, head lice that are warm and well-fed can move quickly from hair to hair and scalp to scalp. Approximately, 2% of the time, indirect transmission occurs through lice-carrying objects such as brushes, combs, hats and athletic gear. It is important that sharing of such objects is kept to a minimum, but since head lice cannot live off the head for more than 24 hours, sharing of items is not as big of an issue.

Can head lice go away on their own?

No, head lice cannot go away without corrective action. Left untreated, head lice will continue to multiply and eventually infest your entire family. Head lice cannot be removed by blow drying, flat-ironing or vigorous shampooing. The head lice eggs use glue to stay in the hair while head lice babies and adults use their claws.

Do lice removal products that I can buy at the local drugstore or with a prescription work?

There are two reasons why not to purchase drugstore and prescription products to remove lice. First, they only kill about 45% of adult lice. The adult lice are becoming resistant to the chemicals and the chemicals do not kill the eggs. The product needs to be continually applied to ensure newly hatched lice are killed. Second, continual application can be dangerous. The chemicals in the products have been linked to central nervous system problems, autism, ADHD and general ill-health. The odors are offensive and often cause headaches and dizziness.

Can I just treat with home remedies?

There is nothing wrong with home remedies. However, they are often extremely messy and you still need to comb and pick to ensure all the eggs (nits) are removed.

What can I do to prevent lice?

The best way to prevent lice is to wear your hair high and tight to the head, such as a bun, braids or a pony tail.  Lice also do not like the smells of mint, rosemary, tea tree oil or mango.  So using those smells in products for your hair will help as well.

What are the tell-tale signs of head lice?

There are no tell-tale signs of head lice. Only 50% of all infected people itch from the lice bites. Some people experience a low-grade fever, bags under the eyes and a rash at the nape of the neck.
