Principal's Newsletter - June 1, 2016

Summer!   We have all been looking forward to this for quite a while.  This cool and wet spring makes these lovely sun filled days so much more appreciated!  I pray that you have a fun filled, relaxing time with your children until school starts again August 17th.

We are saying goodbye this year to three people who are retiring: Mrs. Kreis, our founding Librarian, Mrs. Grissinger who has been with us for 10 years in Grade 4, and our Athletic Director, Jerry Kyle. We are so grateful for the love and service that these people have given to the children of All Saints Catholic Academy. Their careers as educators have been exemplary, and they will be deeply missed.   We are also saying goodbye to Mrs. Rufo in Grade 3 who is also a founding teacher, Mrs. Cernek in JH Language Arts, Mrs. Chitwood in JH Religion, and Mrs. Budiman our Aftercare Coordinator. We are so very thankful to them for sharing their gifts with our students, and wish them well in their next positions.

We welcome Mrs. Brauweiler as our new librarian, Mrs. Kennedy in Grade 4, Mrs. Bartlett    in Grade 5, and Mrs. Galise for Grade 8 Language Arts.  Mr. Keith Glab will fill the Athletic Director position.

We are still interviewing for the JH religion and aftercare coordinator positions.

And, of course, we will be warmly welcoming Mrs. Melissa Santos as Principal.  I know that you will give her your support and love as All Saints Catholic Academy moves forward.

As for me, I appreciate deeply the wonderful opportunity that it has been to work with this wonderful staff, the wonderful families, and especially the wonderful children you have shared with me.  I am very grateful as well for the special send-off you have given me. I will hold you in my heart always.

Summer Reading List

There is a Summer Reading List for K – 5 grades as well as the Junior High Summer Reading List 2016 on the website.  Please have you child read regularly throughout the summer. It is important that summer be fun and refreshing; but it is also important that we do not lose the reading skills and appreciation that the teachers have shared with your child.

School Supplies List

School supply lists for next year are posted on the webpage.   See information below on online school supply ordering.

2016-2017 School Supply Online Ordering

School families are now able to order their student's school supplies for the 2016-2017 school year with schoolkidz (a Staples company). Complete your School Supply ONline Ordering Information at www.shopttkits.com,  and use the school's account number which is 33770.

Orders will be accepted until Friday, June 17. This deadline is a firm date and unfortunately, no exceptions can be made. Please retain a copy of the order confirmation email for your records.

Ordering information already went home with all oldest and only students.  Please note that ordering online from schoolkidz is optional.  Since schoolkidz is a Staples company, supply descriptions will match their inventory. You are welcome to purchase similar supplies elsewhere.

So, if you wish to avoid the crowded aisles come July/August in Target, Walmart, Staples etc, do not delay, sit down today and order your school supply kit(s) that will be delivered directly to the school in August for pick up at the Meet and Greet.  If you have any questions, please contact Mili Jain at mili_anand@hotmail.com.

Looking for Something Fun for the Summer Break?

Mr. Justin Busche will be running a PE Spirit Summer Camp this summer at All Saints.   This will be an opportunity to continue the fun from PE combined with a touch of grace for incoming K-5 students the week of June 6 - 10. The K-2nd grade camp will be held from 8:45 - 10:15 AM, and the 3rd - 5th grade camp will be held from 10:30 AM - 12:00 PM. Students will have the opportunity to enhance their learning of popular sports, fun activities and increased fitness with a focus on a Biblical theme each day. Think of it as one part Vacation Bible School, one part Fitness, one part Sports, and ten parts Awesome, all mixed in a blender for a week’s worth of FUN!!!

The cost of each camp is $80 for ASCA students and $100 for non-ASCA students (there is a multiple family member discount available).  Registration forms can be found at the ACSA website, and may be dropped off in the school office.  If you have any additional questions about the PE Spirit Camp, please email Mr. Busche at jbusche@ascacademy.org

Dreading Desk and Locker Leftovers?

What about those worn-out gym shoes?  What do you with all the used school supplies the kids come home with as the year starts winding down?  Toss most of it out?  Wouldn’t it be great to spare our drawers and closets from overflowing, and instead donate these items to be reused and recycled?

Please join ASCA in supporting the School and Community Assistance for Recycling and Composting Education (SCARCE) – Tools for Schools Program (TFS)

SCARCE is dedicated to educating students, teachers, residents, businesses, and the general public to conserve natural resources and energy, prevent pollution, reduce waste, recycle, and compost organic materials, so that together we can make a difference; we can protect the environment and work toward a sustainable future for our community.

What:  Fill out the school supply donation form for SCARCE.  The form designates what items your child should bring home vs. keep at ASCA for donation to SCARCE.  Send this form to your child’s teacher.  Each classroom will have a collection box.  Or if you have a simple request of either sending all the items home or ASCA keeping all of them for donation feel free to e-mail your teacher instead and recycle the checklist.

Once collected, these items will be taken to SCARCE.  Then what…

75% of the donated items are distributed to low income schools, alternative schools, and special education programs in Illinois.  The remaining 25% of items are sent to schools, orphanages, hospitals, libraries and youth centers around the world. – including Ghana, Kenya, China, India, Ethiopia, Lithuania, Columbia, Honduras, Costa Rica, Rwanda, Uganda and many more.  Since its inception in 2002, SCARCE’s Tools for Schools Program has diverted over 1,000,000 supplies from the landfill.

Even crayons have a special purpose!  SCARCE will peel, sort and melt the broken and used crayons in a crock pot.  They will then be poured into special molds to form large crayons to be used by children with special needs.  Any whole crayons received will be sorted into sets for underprivileged children.

Nike Reuse-a-Shoe

If your child would like to donate their worn-out gym shoes as well, Girl Scout Troop # 51102 will have a collection box available. Shoes will be delivered to a Nike drop box where Nike will take those worn-out gym shoes and recycle them in order to make new play surfaces.  Instead of filling up landfills, they are made into something to help you wear- out your next pair of gym shoes!  Simply add shoes to the checklist and they will be delivered to a Nike drop box. http://www.nike.com/us/en_us/c/better-world/reuse-a-shoe

Thank you from SHPP Community Outreach

Here’s a brief recap of what your generosity of time, treasure and talent has accomplished in the name of All Saints this school year:

  • In honor of 9/11, students created cards during art classes for Operation Support Our Troops to comfort and thank our American forces.

  • On MLK Day of Service our school families came together to support various outreach programs in our communities through acts of service and kindness.

  • We purchased Bosh Bosh goods in support of Liberian women.

  • Several collections were held beginning with cereal boxes at the Meet and Greet that were sent to Loaves and Fishes, eyeglasses for the Lions Club vision program, Halloween candy collection to send to residents at elder care homes, collections during Advent for Hesed House and during Lent for the Mexican orphanage, and finally the used school supplies and sneakers collected most recently for recycle programs at SCARCE and Nike.

What can you continue to do over summer vacation?  Save your pop tabs and box tops to turn in when school resumes.
