Saints Speak - February 9, 2017

From Mrs. Santos

It is hard to believe that we are already into the 3rd quarter of this school year.  While overall it has been a mild winter, we have certainly been on a roller coaster with the temperatures and precipitation as of late.  If the weather allows, we will be doing our morning walk and recess outside in the fresh air.  Please make sure that your students are prepared with the appropriate outerwear, gloves and hats.  It is still chilly out there!

Also, just a reminder that if your student is going to be absent, or arriving late due to an appointment or other reason, please call the school at (630) 961-6125, or email attendance@ascacademy.org by 8 AM.  You can even call in an absence or late arrival the night before.  Simply call the school number, and select extension 121 to get to the absence hotline.   There is alot of office follow up that is required when we do not know why a student is not in school.  We thank you for your help.  Please refamiliarize yourself with the procedures below to report an absence or late arrival.

To report a student absence or late arrival, please remember the following procedures:

  1. Call the school at 1-630-961-6125, X121
  2. Email both the student's homeroom teacher and attendance@ascacademy.org
  3. The following information should be included in your phone call or email:
  • Student's Name
  • Student's Homeroom
  • Date of the Absence/Late Arrival
  • Reason for the Absence/Late Arrival (if student has a fever, please mention in reason for absence)

Our St. Valentine's Day classroom parties will be held this coming Tuesday, February 14.  The 14th is also the next Out of Uniform Day Fundraiser benefitting the Class of 2018.  If you did not purchase the prepaid package earlier in the school year, you may elect to participate by bringing $10 to school on the 14th to be out of uniform.  Our out of uniform theme on Tuesday, February 14 is Pink and Red.

I would like to express my appreciation to all of the school families who have completed the Diocese of Joliet Parent Satisfaction Survey.  It is important to our administrators, teachers and board members to gain an understanding of how our families are feeling about our school. Your participation in this process will help us to continue to provide excellence in Catholic education. The CSO is using a third party to perform, collect and analyze the data provided, which will protect all participants’ anonymity.

I assure you that I will share the results of the survey with you. If there are common themes expressed by our families, I will address action step(s) to alleviate any concerns. I urge you to take advantage of this opportunity to share your thoughts with us.  Whether there are areas in which we can improve, or areas in which we are doing well, I thank you for taking the time to have your voice be heard.

Please click the link below to access the survey, and complete it no later than Monday, February 27, 2017. It should take you no more than 10 minutes to complete the survey: https://www.surveymonkey.com/r/Parent_Satisfaction_2017

Lastly, I hope that you have all received an email about re-enrolling your student(s) for the 2017-2018 school year.  As a school parent myself, I am thrilled that the process is so easy.   We are asking that you complete the re-enrollment process via the instructions provided in the email you received by this Friday, February 10.   If you have any questions about the re-enrollment or SchoolSpeak, please contact us.  We are happy to help!

Puberty Presentations for Father/Son and Mother/Daughter

The SHPP Faith Formation Committee has invited Dr. Coleen Mast, a leader in the field of chastity education, to offer her popular “Puberty Presentations for Father/Son and Mother/Daughter” to Fifth Grade students and their parents. This event will take place on Thursday, February 23 from 7 -9  pm.  This is an excellent opportunity for 5th grade families to prepare for their mandatory academic and ongoing puberty changes discussions. The talks consist of two simultaneous two hour presentations in two different rooms; the girls led by Dr. Mast, and the boys led by a pro-life man. The presentations will include videos and discussions on how to mature spiritually and emotionally while these physical changes are taking place. The presentation will include some theology and biology of the body, with practical advice for puberty and virtue challenges.

The Mother/Daughter session will be held in McSherry Hall, and the Father/Son presentation will take place in Cafeteria 1. While this is a 5th grade specific program, 4th grade parents are welcome to attend without their children. There is no cost to attend the event, and no food will be offered during these sessions. For more information about Dr. Mast, please visit www.sexrespect.com.    For questions or to RSVP by next Thursday, February 16, please contact ascapubertytalk2016@yahoo.com indicating names of parent and student and grade level.  We would like to clarify that this is not the “birds and bees” talk, but rather a great starting point for further upcoming discussions.
