Principal's Newsletter - August 28, 2013

I hope that this has been a wonderful opening of school for you and your children.  While the cadence of summer is peaceful and enjoyable, it is simply impossible for an educator not to feel excited and more complete once we have the students back in the building. We miss them.

As you know, our school is built on six beliefs: First, that God is the beginning and end of all human existence. Second, that education is essentially a moral endeavor. Third, that you as parents are the primary educators of your children. Fourth, that the subject of education is the student. Fifth, that teaching is an intimate communication between souls. And finally, that decisions are best made locally. In the coming weeks, we will look at how these beliefs come alive in our practices at All Saints Catholic Academy. This week we start with the first and third beliefs.  Each week, our religion classes look at the Gospel in preparation for the Mass experience on the coming Sunday. We read the Gospels and talk about what they mean. We also ask that you, as a family, discuss how you will try to live the Gospel message that you experience after attending Mass.  Reflecting together will exhibit to your child how important your faith is to you.  There is no substitution for the principal role that you serve as you model the practice of your faith for your child.

Hot Lunch and Snack/Lunch Rules

Hot lunch begins this coming week on Tuesday, September 3rd. Again, you may only send snacks to school that are from the approved snack list in original packaging. We will not allow your child to open or eat a snack in their class room that is not on that list. For lunch in the cafeteria, if you send peanut butter or peanut/tree nut products you must send a wet wipe for your child to wipe their hands and face so they do not inadvertently touch a child with a peanut allergy. Even though the allergy children sit at a peanut-free table, residual from a child eating peanut butter could be dangerous as they play together on the playground. We are very grateful for your understanding on this life-threatening issue. If we all are careful we will all be safe.

Mum Sale

All Saints is holding a fall flower fundraiser.  Please see the sale flier with details on how to order your yellow, bronze, maroon or purple mums to beautify your home this fall.  These flowers are locally grown by Lizzie’s Garden in Naperville, and are of the same high quality as the plants that were offered in our spring geranium flower sale, so do not miss this opportunity.  Jumbo pots of garden mums are being offered for only $20, and medium pots for $10.  Please do not delay in submitting your order ASAP, as we are on a very short timeline.

Your form and check payment should be returned to the school office by Tuesday, September 3; and plants will be available for pick up in McSherry Hall on Thursday, September 5.  Please contact Michelle Yacullo at (630) 416-6691 or yacullo@sbcglobal.net  with any questions.  Thank you in advance for supporting this fundraising initiative that will directly benefit ASCA students and programs.

Our first Market Day of the year will be held on Wednesday, September 18th, with product pick up from 2:30-3:30 pm in the gym (enter through Door 9).  As a reminder, 10% of your pre-tax order will be credited to the 2013-2014 fundraising obligation, so please take advantage of this fundraising opportunity.  You are encouraged to place your order online at www.marketday.com, and pay by credit card.   The deadline for internet orders is Saturday, September 14th, at 11 pm.  All Saints Catholic Academy's school code is 27119.  Volunteers are needed to help sort and stack the food. Kindergarten through 8th grade students should be in uniform.  All students will be photographed, and will receive a class photo at no cost.  A Picture Day is Coming! flier is being sent home with all students today.  The picture order form with information about the optional purchase of additional photos will be sent home next week.

Art Awareness

We are introducing this exciting program at All Saints for students in kindergarten through 3rd grade.  Students will learn about different periods of art, individual artists, and their artistic approach.  Students will then have the opportunity to become artists themselves by creating an art project that applies the artists’ techniques along with their imagination and creativity.  We are looking for volunteers to coordinate Kindergarten and 2nd grade.  You do not need to be an artist to volunteer.  All volunteers will need to have completed Protecting God’s Children.  If you are interested or have any questions, please contact Wendy Cornell at wmauricioc@gmail.com, or (630) 881-8874 for more information.
