Principal's Newsletter - August 21, 2013

Welcome Home! The students have brought this building back to life.  We have missed them.  I hope that this year is the best ever for your child.

Welcome to Mr. Sedlacek

Our new general music teacher is Mr. Tom Sedlacek.  Mr. Sedlacek has a bachelor’s degree with a music major, and is the weekend music director for St. Andrew Parish in Romeoville.  He is a great addition to our staff.

Curriculum Night

Curriculum night is next week. On Monday, August 26, we have sessions for parents of students in grades Kindergarten-1-2-3-4-5.  Each teacher will have two sessions – one at 7:00 pm, and another at 7:30 pm, so families with children in multiple grades can see all of their teachers.  On Tuesday, August 27, preschool and junior high parents will attend.  The preschool session is from 7:00 to 7:30 pm.  The parents of 6th graders will meet in McSherry. The teachers of 6th graders will speak to them together from 6:30 to 7:00 pm. The parents of 7th and 8th graders will follow a rotation of your child’s schedule that will begin at 7 pm, and continue until almost 8:30 pm. There will be tables with representatives from area Catholic High Schools in the cafeteria, so you can obtain materials and ask questions as you plan for the high school years ahead.

Hot Lunch and Snack/Lunch Rules

Hot lunch starts on Monday September 3rd.  Again, you may only send snacks to school that are from the approved snack list and in the original packaging.  We will not allow your child to open or eat a snack in their class room that is not on that list. For lunch in the cafeteria, if you send peanut butter or peanut products, you must send a wet wipe for your child to wipe their hands and face so they do not inadvertently touch a child with a peanut allergy. Even though the allergy children sit at a peanut-free table, residual from a child eating peanut butter could be dangerous as they play together on the playground. We are very grateful for your understanding on this life threatening issue. If we all are careful, we will all be safe.

THANK YOU

Thank you to all of the parents and staff for your cooperation in the parking lot during drop off and pick up on opening day. We appreciate your compliance with the procedures that have been carefully designed to keep everyone safe.  FYI, if you are parking to drop off or pick up, parking is in the south parking lot on the Aurora Avenue side of the school (outside Door 1).  We also want to be good neighbors to the Jefferson Estates subdivision north of the school.  Please do not use their subdivision for pick up or drop off.

Free and Reduced Lunch Forms

The 2013-2014 Free and Reduced Lunch Order Form needs to be completed and returned to ASCA by all families who are applying by Wednesday, August 28th.  Please contact Diane Huber at (630) 961-6125, or dhuber@ascacademy.org with any questions.  Copies of the forms and instructions in both English and Spanish are available at the school website, as well as in the school office.

Principal’s Newsletter

The Principal’s Newsletter is sent out to all families each week on Wednesday.  An e-blast with link is typically sent out to all school families letting them know when the newsletter is available to be viewed electronically.  Today’s newsletter is going out to all school families in hard copy this week only.  To receive this newsletter in hard copy going forward, you will need to submit a request in writing in one of two ways:

  1. Sign and return the bottom portion of the bright green Student Parent Handbook Form that you received in your back to school mailing.
  2. Send an email to Helen Kolar, Student Services Secretary, at hkolar@ascacademy.org to request a hard copy.

Photo Opt Out

Each year, we market and publicize the school through photos taken at various academic and extracurricular activities.  Most of these images are used within the school setting and in our parish bulletins.  Occasionally, a newspaper will take photos and run a story about ASCA.  Newspapers usually require names of the students.  In the past, most families have permitted this photography to occur.  Therefore, we do not require a form to grant permission.  If you have any concern with your child being photographed and/or name released, you will need to contact Patty Bajek via e-mail at pbajek@ascacademy.org with the restrictions that you want in place.  Your child's teacher will also be notified.  Please send your instructions by Friday, August 30th.  FYI to all parents…..you or your child may not post photos taken at ASCA on the internet or in Facebook without written permission.  You must be 13 years old to establish a Facebook account, so very few of our students are eligible.

Join us for SHPP’s First Meeting

SHPP will hold its first meeting of the year on Wednesday, September 11th at 9:30 am in Café 1 following mass.  Learn about the many activities at ASCA, and find out how you can become involved.  Please contact Robin Gullborg, SHPP president, at robinborg@sbcglobal.net with any questions.

The 2013 Fall Fun Fair is Sunday, September 29th

Save the date!  More details to follow.

Car Line Name Display Cards

Help us to move our PM car line along by displaying the bright pink card that was sent home today with all oldest and only students in K-8.  You will find your family and all grade K-8 student names on this pink card, which will help our staff to find your student(s) quickly and efficiently in the car line at PM dismissal.  Please display the card in the front or passenger window on the right hand side of your vehicle where it can be easily seen.  We encourage you to make additional copies of this card to keep in other vehicles that may be picking up your student.  Bus riders – do not throw away your display card.  On those days when D203 is not offering busing, you may find yourself in the car line to pick up your student.  Please note that the school office should be informed of the make, model, color and license plate number of all vehicles that will be entering our campus.

Student Parent Handbook Form

Our back to school mailing included a Parent Student Handbook Form (bright green form sent to all school families).  We require that each family sign and return this form to confirm that you have reviewed the 2013-2014 Parent Student Handbook and all related addendums online.  This form should be returned to school as soon as possible.  Please contact Patty Bajek at pbajek@ascacademy.org, or (630) 961-6125 with any questions.
