Easter Joy !

In this season of Easter joy, once again tragedy interrupts the innocence of living. People of my generation grew up in houses where no one could even remember where the front door key was when you needed to lock up for a week’s vacation. Flying was a fun adventure that you even dressed up for.  There were no security lines, and friends and family could walk with you to the gate, and watch your plane take off.  One could attend events like a football game with thousands of spectators without fear because everyone was there to see the game.

We are once again reminded that our children are growing up with a different reality than ours. Vigilance and wariness of the world at large are their reality.  Within your family, and as a school family, we all try to recreate the sense of security and safety that we felt in a simpler time. That is a big task in this chaotic world.  May God bless and help us.

Teacher Appreciation Week

Our Teachers are Stars!

It’s getting close to the end of the school year when we honor and thank our teachers for their dedication to our children.  Teacher Appreciation Week will take place the week of May 6-10.  This year, we are asking parents to support our efforts in two ways:

·         On Monday, May 6, please send your kids to school with a freshly picked or purchased flower.  We will provide teachers with a 12” vase so they can create a bouquet for their classroom.

·         Gift cards for the teachers will be purchased with your donations along with a letter listing the names of all contributors.  A donation of $5 per child is suggested.  Please send donations, payable to ASCA, to the office with "Teacher Appreciation" noted in the memo by Monday, April 29.  Direct questions to Amy Drake at amyLdrake@me.com.

Teacher Appreciation Week will feature the following:

Monday - "I'm a Fan Day" - In addition to the flowers you send, teachers will be welcomed to their classrooms with "Walk of Fame" Stars on their door and will receive a "Fan Letter" from their class

Tuesday - "Red Carpet VIP Luncheon"

Wednesday - Teachers will receive a special note made from seeded paper that will bloom when planted

Thursday – A light breakfast will greet our "Stars" on this morning

Friday - Gift Cards will be distributed along with "Golden Apple" awards

Daddy Daughter Dance 2013

The Daddy Daughter Dance, A Passport to Paris, surpassed all expectations with 245 girls attending the event.  This represents 80% of all girls at ASCA in attendance, and is the largest Daddy Daughter Dance in the history of our school.  An event of this magnitude would not be possible without the many wonderful volunteers that helped to create a memorable evening for our daughters.   A heartfelt thank you goes to Tina Gregus who has been our amazing leader for the past 7 years.  Thanks to everyone that attended and volunteered to make the evening special!

ALSO, many of our special young ladies forgot to take home their Daddy Daughter Dance favors when they left the dance.  The dance favors included an Eiffel Tower key chain and a Paris Amour lotion.  If your daughter did not receive these favors, they can now be picked up in the ASCA office through the end of the week.

April Used Gym Shoe Collection

Ready, Set, Go …run your old gym shoes to ASCA

We are once again collecting adult and child used gym shoes for School & Community Assistance for Recycling & Composting Education (SCARCE).

Then what…

·                     If shoes are Gently-Used they will be given to local organizations, such as PADS in Glen Ellyn or the Midwest Shelter of Homeless Veterans.

·                     If the shoes are not in good condition, they will be Re-Used and Recycled in Nike’s Reuse-A-Shoe Program which turns worn-out gym shoes into sports surfaces, playgrounds and Nike products.  Shoes are delivered to Nike, where they will be de-manufactured so that the recycled “Nike Grind” material can be used to make new products.  By recycling old gym shoes, Nike decreases the environmental impact of using new raw materials and saves used shoes from being sent to landfills.

·                     Since 2003, SCARCE has diverted a TOTAL of 76,962 pairs of gym shoes from landfills. Of those, 57,706 pairs of shoes were recycled with Nike's Resuse-A-Shoe Program and SCARCE donated 19,256 pairs.

All donations can be brought into the ASCA Office April 10-30th.  Stinky and holey encouraged!  If you have any questions, please contact Ann Zediker at jazediker@comcast.net.
