Saints Speak from Mrs. Marshall - 9/26/2024 - Preach the Gospel: Not Just in Words, But in Actions
This week’s saint of the week is St. George. St. George is one of the patron saints of books and reading; I chose him this week to coincide with our Book Fair. He lived in the late third century and was a soldier in Diocletian’s army. Diocletian was not Christian and ordered George to renounce his Christian faith and make a sacrifice to the Roman gods. St. George refused to comply, and was martyred as a result.
Living in the United States in the present day, it is highly unlikely that we would actually lose our lives for practicing our Catholic faith. However, we certainly encounter others in the world who have different beliefs and may question our faith or ridicule us for some of our beliefs. Do you shy away from sharing your faith with those who might have different beliefs, or do you live in a way that lets others know you are proud to be Christian? Do you preach the Gospel not only in your words, but also in your actions? May we pray today for strength to live out our faith each day, as St. George did.
All School Photo – Wednesday, October 2nd
On Wednesday morning we will be taking our all-school photo! All students should be in regular uniform for this. We will do our Spirit Wear Day on THURSDAY next week instead. Please do not use out of uniform passes on Wednesday.
ASCA Fun Run 2024
We had a great Fun Run on Friday! Despite the heat the kids did such an amazing job. We also reached our goal of $60,000! We will celebrate next week with a movie and popcorn afternoon. Congratulations to Mrs. Kennedy’s 4th grade class, who raised the most money and will get to duct tape me to the gym wall next week. We’ll be sure to share pictures! Thank you to all who donated and volunteered to help make the day a success, especially Amy Bono who led our event. We are so grateful for all who supported ASCA’s Fun Run!
Academic Updates
It’s hard to believe, but we are already approaching the midway point of the first trimester! The children are learning and growing so much. Next week, teachers in grades K-3 will send home progress reports. Please review these before Parent-Teacher Conferences so you are ready to discuss your child’s progress at the conference. As a reminder, 4th-8th grade parents may view student grades at any time via FACTS Family Portal, so no paper progress reports will be sent home. Eligibility checks for volleyball and cross country will begin on Friday, so please make sure you are checking your child’s grades and ensuring they complete any missing work.
Yesterday the teachers and I spent part of our afternoon reviewing i-Ready data. Students are beginning to work on their MyPath, the personalized learning side of i-Ready. We will send home the family reports before Parent-Teacher Conferences for your review.
Parent-Teacher Conferences will be held on Thursday, October 10th. Information on how to sign up for a conference was emailed yesterday. Please contact your child’s teacher directly if you are having trouble signing up for a conference, and they can reserve a time slot for you.
Book Fair
Our Book Fair is underway! As the weather gets cooler, now is a great time to get new books and plan for a little more indoor time throughout the fall. Parnets are welcome to shop with their children after school today until 4pm. Tomorrow after Mass is last call for student shopping. Thank you to Lisa Hajek, Jenn Venta, Carolina Zavala, and all our volunteers who have helped out with the Book Fair! Proceeds benefit our school library and classroom libraries.
Charleston Wrap Update
The Charleston Wrap sale continues! So far 131 families are participating and have earned over $9,500 toward their FFOs (Family Fundraising Obligations). There is one day left if to use Charleston Wrap to earn toward your FFO while getting great gifts!
Parish Highlight: Fr. Alex Concert at St. Thomas
We have so much happening at ASCA, but did you know there is also a lot going on at each of our supporting parishes? At least once a month in Saints Speak, I’ll be sharing about an upcoming event or faith experience at one of our parishes. Please consider attending some of these events if your schedule allows, even if it isn’t at your home parish. These are great opportunities to come together as a community and grow in our faith!
Our first event of focus is especially exciting because it features our very own Fr. Alex Lorang! We all love having Fr. Alex as our ASCA chaplain. Did you know he also sings and plays the guitar? On Friday, October 11, he is giving a concert at St. Thomas! This family event begins at 7pm and all are welcome! Click here for more information!
Volleyball Blue Out
Next Friday, October 4th, is our Blue Out! Come join us in the gym at 6pm, 7pm, and 8pm to cheer on our 8th grade volleyball teams in one of their final home games. Any ASCA students in attendance will get an Out of Uniform pass!
If your children are attending Blue Out (or any home games), please remember to monitor their behavior, especially if they are outside the gym. Students should not be going in lockers, wandering the halls, or playing volleyball near the welcome desk or outside Door 1. We love having a full house for our home games but ask that students spend that time in the gym cheering on our teams!
Recess Fun
One of my favorite times of the week is when I supervise 2nd & 3rd grade recess on Fridays. I've attached a few photos from some recent recess fun. The children are loving the new playground equipment, basketball courts, and more. Some are even using their recess time to learn some sign language! I enjoy getting to visit with the students outside of the classroom and see them as a community of friends playing and laughing together. Thank you to all who contributed to this great addition to our school!
