Saints Speak - 9/21/2017 - The Gift of Charity

The Gift of Charity

Charity is a gift from God that enables us to love him above all things, and to love our neighbor as we love ourselves.  We need to show each and every person love, kindness, respect, and care.  Sometimes living out this gift in our daily lives takes practice.  Putting God first in what we say and do, and in how we treat others.  Let us make a point of being an example of charity in the way we speak, act and treat others.

Welcome Desk and Early Dismissal

I have received so many positive comments about our new main entrance at Door 1.  Our two Welcome Desk Attendants, Geri Everson and Diane Weltzien, have enjoyed meeting all of our school parents and students.  I am grateful for the professional and gracious way in which they greet all visitors to the school.  They truly embody the All Saints spirit, and are working hard to serve and help our All Saints school community.

If you have ever been at school towards the end of the school day, you may have experienced the flurry of activity as students are in transition from their last class to homeroom, bus students are en route to their transportation home, and students who are leaving school early are being called down.  It too often becomes very busy at the Welcome Desk, difficult to hear a person on the phone or even someone standing right in front of you.  As a result, it also may be difficult to locate a student who is leaving early with all of the end of the day activity as it can become quite loud in the classroom, and students may be at their lockers or in the hallway.

In order to facilitate the dismissal of students who are leaving school early beginning on Monday, September 25, all early dismissals must be communicated by 3 pm.  If communicating via email, please contact both the homeroom teacher and attendance@ascacademy.org.    Phone calls to the school must be received by 3 pm, as well.

Students who are leaving early will be called down at 3:10 pm during afternoon announcements and prayer, and should be picked up at the Welcome Desk at Door 1 by 3:15 pm.

Please note that beginning Monday, September 25, students will no longer be called down for early dismissal after 3:10 pm.

If you are making an afternoon appointment for your student or will need a student to leave before 3:30 pm, please plan on communicating with the school NO LATER THAN 3 PM, and picking up your student at the Welcome Desk at 3:15 pm.   Any deviation from this policy will result in students being released at 3:30 pm with the rest of the school population.

Project SMILE

This past spring, All Saints Catholic Academy joined with elementary and middle school teachers from Indian Prairie School District 204 and West Aurora District 129 in receiving a $500,000 two-year grant from the Illinois State Board of Education.  This grant fostered Project SMILE (Science and Math In Line with Engineering), a program placing teachers into college laboratories and businesses where science, technology, engineering and mathematics skills are applied every day.

All Saints became aware and involved when we were researching new middle school science curriculum last school year.   I am very excited about all of the ideas that our staff who are participating in Project SMILE are already bringing back to ASCA; and what we will be able to offer students to excite them and perhaps create a passion that leads to a STEM related vocation.

If you are interested in reading a comprehensive article about the program that was recently featured in the Naperville Sun/Chicago Tribune, please go to the following link  - http://www.chicagotribune.com/suburbs/naperville-sun/ct-nvs-science-grant-st-0910-20170912-story.html.  There is a great photo of Mrs. Porlier and Ms. Catalano in the feature.

“A Green Tie Affair” – Dinner Dance Auction 2018

This year’s Dinner Dance Auction (DDA), “A Green Tie Affair”, will be held on Saturday, March 17, 2018.  This is always a lovely evening to come together as community to celebrate All Saints Catholic Academy.  I hope that you have already put a hold on the date in your calendar, and are planning on attending.  This is the time to be talking with your friends, or with the parents of students in your child’s homeroom so you can put a table together (and perhaps share a babysitter) to come and enjoy the event.

If you did not know, the DDA is the biggest fundraiser at All Saints.  We are always so grateful for the generosity of our school families who purchase tickets to attend the DDA, who donate items to the auction, and who also purchase both Live and Silent auction items.   All of this helps to make the DDA successful, which benefits All Saints Catholic Academy.

It really takes a village to pull off the DDA, and many, many hands make the work load lighter.  There are so many ways in which you could become involved.   The DDA presents a tremendous opportunity to give back your time and talent to the school.  Please consider finding a way in which you can contribute.   You can email me directly at msantos@ascacademy.org to let me know you would like to participate, or contact the DDA at dda@ascacademy.org.

Last week our runners competed at the Greg Vogler Memorial Co-Ed Meet at Marmion Academy.  This meet is broken into 2 flights allowing runners who do not normally finish in the top 25 an opportunity to earn a ribbon.  The goal of the XC program is to have fun and see personal improvements as the season progresses.  Ribbons are fun, but the individual improvement in each runner is really something to be proud of!

Congratulations to the following runners who won a ribbon in flight 1 races: Emily Coleman (24th), Zoe Girard (22nd), Kiley Senall (6th), Payton Knox (7th), and Brendan Fenlon (12th).

Congratulations to the following runners who won a ribbon in flight 2 races: Julia Johanneson (13th), Dylan Kokkinos (4th), Sarah Meyers (32nd), Katie Schuele (31st), Bella Wojtowicz (12th), Jack Augustine (32nd), Declan Cadden (23rd), Jonathan Coleman (3rd), Jonathan Hajek (10th), Sebastian Knox (7th), Leo Del Toro (29th), Jordan Dela Cruz (30th), Ellie Glab (6th), Ella Davis (5th), Sophie Scrima (1st) and Noah Bobofchak (8th).

Next week is the last meet before the championship.  It will be at Kress Creek Farm in West Chicago.  All Saints is Co-Hosting this meet and we need full participation from volunteers.  Contact Susan Glab (ks4glab@yahoo.com) to find out how you can help.
