Saints Speak – 11/16/2017 – Equipping Ourselves with Information

As access to the internet (and other technology) increases for our children, so do our concerns about their online safety.  Our students at All Saints Catholic Academy are very tech savvy.  The adults in their lives – the staff and administration of All Saints, and especially parents and guardians – need to be aware of the dangers that our children face every day in their online lives; and be informed about strategies that will help us in teaching and parenting in this hyper digital age.

School Home Parent Partnership (SHPP) is sponsoring an Internet Safety Presentation that will take place at ASCA on Wednesday, November 29 at 6:30 pm.   I truly hope that you will plan on attending; and please feel free to bring a friend or a neighbor who might also benefit from the information that will be shared.  To our parents of younger children – even though your child may not have a smart phone yet, they will have one some day in the future.  You will absolutely benefit from hearing this presentation, as well.

Topics of discussion include:

  • Social Media – what it is, what advantages and positives it provides, and the pitfalls of it.
  • Online Gaming – what are the dangers and suggestions to implement in the home to increase safety.
  • Cyber Bullying – being a bystander as well as an upstander, with examples of how they can identify a situation and support a victim of online bullying.
  • Online Predators – how predators connect with teens online.
  • Over Exposure – the permanency of online posts, the implications of inappropriate posts, and creating a positive digital footprint.
  • Sexting – what it is, consequences of it, possible solutions for groups of students to prevent the actions before they receive the text
  • Proper actions to take when students encounter problems online.
  • Montoring Options for Devices
  • Creating an escape or exit plan between parent and student – helping students making safe decisions vs. a decision to stay out of trouble with parents.

By increasing our awareness and comfort on these issues, parents will be more involved in their child’s online life, thus increasing the communication on these topics and their safety. If you would like to see more information about the presentation, please click here.

I would like to thank SHPP for making this presentation possible, and their support in so many areas of our lives at All Saints.

This coming Monday, November 20, SHPP will be treating all students and staff with a pretzel from the Pretzel Factory in honor of Thanksgiving.  While SHPP is THANKFUL for each one of your children and our staff, we also are so very thankful for all that they do to make ASCA a better place.  SHPP is a wonderful group to be involved with, as their work has a direct impact on each student, staff member and family at All Saints.  Please consider attending a meeting if you would like to know more about SHPP or become involved.  The December SHPP meeting will be on December 7 at 6:30 pm at ASCA.  All are welcome!

Please note that the pretzels are produced in a nut free facility, however they are not gluten free.  Please reach out to Theresa Cunningham at tacunningham@comcast.net with any allergy concerns, and an acceptable alternative will be provided.

I would like to take this opportunity to remind you of just a few of the many things that SHPP is involved with.  SHPP also plans ‘fun-raising’ events like our recent Trunk or Treat that connect us and build community.  I hope that families will take advantage of Parents Night Out on Saturday, December 9 from 6 – 8 pm at Airtastic Play Land for K-5 studentsStay tuned for registration information!  In the meantime, save the date, plan some holiday shopping or a date night, and put together a group of your child’s friends to enjoy a night of fun together.

New to All Saints this year, SHPP is excited to sponsor a Holiday Shop from December 12-14.  The shop will offer a large variety of gifts with kid-friendly prices (most gifts are under $5), and gift wrapping is included.  Stay out of the cold and crowds and get all your shopping done right in McSherry Hall.  Look for the preview table next week, and more information in the weeks to come.  Take a peek at our online shop here.

SHPP’s Community Outreach would like to thank all families who participated in our October Halloween candy collection. Together as a community, we collected approximately 250 pounds of candy which was donated to Operation Support Our Troops. This is such a great way to put a huge smile someone’s face. Thank you to everyone who donated!  Community Outreach is busy organinzing new ways in which our All Saints school community can make an impact helping others.

In reflecting on the importance of information, we presented our first State of the School Address to the ASCA school community on Wednesday evening.  I would like to thank everyone who was able to attend and find out more about All Saints.  I am grateful for all of the positive feedback that I have received.  Information that was shared will be posted on the ASCA website.

Meanwhile, we look forward to welcoming our grandparents to All Saints this coming Tuesday afternoon for Grandparents Day.  On this day, we will celebrate these very important people in our lives, and as part of our greater All Saints school family.

As you and your family gather round your tables this Thanksgiving, may your hearts and home be filled with happiness, with the blessings of our loving and gracious God, and with the joy of family, friends, and those that are dear to you.
