Saints Speak - 10/26/2017 - Honor and Respect

Our virtues focus this week is centered around Honor, which is the recognition of human dignity we offer by showing respect for other people, their names and reputations.  In the book of Romans (12:10), we read, “Love one another with mutual affection; anticipate one another in showing honor.”  We believe that each person is made in the image and likeness of God, and therefore, deserving of respect.

How do we show honor – to other adults and authority figures, to our friends, family and fellow students?     We are all works in progress.  Sometimes we stumble.  The prophet Isaiah (64:8) tells us, “But now, O Lord, You are our Father, We are the clay, and You our potter; And all of us are the work of Your hand.  Sometimes we need to reflect, and hit the reset button.

The Drive Up Drop Off Line

If you drive up and drop off your student in the car line leading to Door 7 in the morning, you may have noticed myself and other staff members outside in the past week.  To facilitate a timely drop off and to ensure that cars do not spill out onto Aurora Avenue and cause a safety issue, cars should enter the All Saints campus through the western entrance and form two lines at the posted sign.  And when coming around the northern side of the school, an orderly merge should take place from two lines into one.  This will especially become important as the weather continues to get colder and more inclement, and more students are being driven up and dropped off.

It has been reported to me that –

  • our families are cutting each other off in the line.
  • our families are blocking access to the 2nd line.
  • our families are afraid to form a 2nd line, or are not informed that a 2nd line should be formed.
  • our families are not allowing cars to orderly merge in from the 2nd line.
  • our families are offering each other gestures that do not include a neighborly waive or a thumbs up.

In the morning, every parent who is dropping off their student needs to be aware that we all have the same objective; and that we all have to work together to accomplish this safely, expediently and with respect and honor for all.

At All Saints, students receive a Saintly Act when they are recognized for showing honesty, kind and respectful behavior to staff members, volunteering to help others, or showing positive changes in behavior.  Students are not acting in this way because they want to be noticed, or because they expect to be rewarded; but because it is the right thing to do.  The car line should work, not because I am outside monitoring it; but simply because it is the right thing to do.

Our School Home

Another area where we have some work to do is here in our school home.  Our custodial and administrative staff, along with building contractors, worked very hard all throughout the summer break to make our school building new and fresh, a shining jewel to be enjoyed by all.  While students were off for summer vacation, we were here painting walls, framing and hanging pictures, and creating new spaces.  We want our school building to be clean, warm and inviting, and beautiful – a place we can all be very proud to call home.

I am saddened to share that there are areas of the building where students have been purposely peeling paint off the walls.  There are broken frames now where pictures and art once hung.   Our students need to honor and respect physical space, and those who work to clean and maintain it This is our expectation.  This is an expectation that you, our school parents, can help to reinforce with your student.

Parent Teacher Conferences

Scheduling and/or attending Parent Teacher Conferences on November 2 and 3 is another area where honor and respect in the parent teacher relationship can be nurtured and grown.  We are working together toward a common goal – the success and formation of each student.  K – 5 parents should schedule their appointment via SchoolSpeak.  If you have any questions, or need some assistance on how to book your appointment, please contact the school.  We are happy to help!  Preschool conferences are being scheduled by the teachers.  Junior High families should plan to join us in the gym on Thursday, November 2 from Noon to 5 pm, and again from 6 – 8 pm to speak with their student’s teachers.  On Friday, November 3, Junior High will be conducting group conferences by invitation only.  If you are in need of child care, it will be provided throughout conferences by our Student Voices.  Thank you to all of our Student Voices who will be here at school helping on your day off

Trunk or Treat

Tomorrow afternoon, Friday, October 27, our school community will be celebrating our 2nd Annual Trunk or Treat after school from 3:30 – 5 pm.  A lot of work has been put into this event by our ‘Fun’ raising team, as well as all of the parents who will be decorating their cars and handing out treats.  So, I hope that you honor their efforts by planning on attending.  I will be there!!!  Students may bring their costumes to school tomorrow, and change into them after school for Trunk or Treat.  The event is held outside, so please dress for the weather.  There will be pizza available for sale by the slice, so come prepared, and don’t leave hungry.   Students who are attending Trunk or Treat must be accompanied by their parent or another responsible adult.

Last week, I shared what a Wonderful World ASCA Is in Saints Speak, which I truly believe with all my heart.  Sometimes, being reminded of that, reflecting on our own part in making that true, and making the effort to improve, is all we need to make that a reality every day at All Saints.
